Selected as one of NPR's Best Books of 2016, this book offers superior learning tools for teachers and students, from A to Z.

An explosive growth in research on how people learn has revealed many ways to improve teaching and catalyze learning at all ages. The purpose of this book is to present this new science of learning so that educators can creatively translate the science into exceptional practice. The book is highly appropriate for the preparation and professional development of teachers and college faculty, but also parents, trainers, instructional designers, psychology students, and simply curious folks interested in improving their own learning.

Based on a popular Stanford University course,
The ABCs of How We Learn uses a novel format that is suitable as both a textbook and a popular read. With everyday language, engaging examples, a sense of humor, and solid evidence, it describes 26 unique ways that students learn.

Each chapter offers a concise and approachable breakdown of one way people learn, how it works, how we
know it works, how and when to use it, and what mistakes to avoid. The book presents learning research in a way that educators can creatively translate into exceptional lessons and classroom practice.

The book covers field-defining learning theories ranging from behaviorism (R is for Reward) to cognitive psychology (S is for Self-Explanation) to social psychology (O is for Observation). The chapters also introduce lesser-known theories exceptionally relevant to practice, such as arousal theory (X is for eXcitement). Together the theories, evidence, and strategies from each chapter can be combined endlessly to create original and effective learning plans and the means to know if they succeed. 26 illustrations

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The book serves as a much-needed bridge between new revelations in the science of learning and everyday classroom practices. Each section is accessible, concise and well-stocked with primary references and resources."
NPR Books, Best of 2016

"Daniel Schwartz and his co-authors have developed an easy-to-understand, easy-to-use synthesis of the learning literature without oversimplifying the complexity of the teaching and learning process. I am particularly impressed with the inclusion of multiple examples, potential risks, and possible misapplications, along with the acknowledgement that no one technique, by itself, will likely work in every situation. This book does a wonderful job introducing usable knowledge that can be flexibly applied by those seeking to encourage learning."
David B. Daniel, PhD, Professor of Psychology, James Madison University

"Packed with tips, tools, and exercises for every type of learner and learning situation,
The ABCs of How We Learn is a book whose utility goes far beyond the classroom, but into every area of life―from remembering your password to learning to play golf―and it should be required reading for us all."
PsychCentral

"[A] teaching resource that is concise, is easy to navigate, and displays current and proven techniques. . . .
The ABCs of How We Learn is a text that would be most appropriate for educators of all disciplines and at all levels, especially for primary and secondary school educators. . . . [O]ffers an easy-to-use reference for novice and expert teachers that will help them further develop their teaching skills. . . . [A]nyone interested in learning theories can appreciate the inclusion of various chapters related to educational psychology, specifically with regard to feedback, knowledge, norms, observation, and reward."
PsycCRITIQUES

"A uniquely actionable new book of learning sciences principles that can improve teaching and learning…. [E]very teacher and student can benefit."
Learning and the Brain

I teach an undergraduate educational psychology course at a small liberal arts college. With some exceptions, my students do not plan to enter teaching as a profession. This book is a really nice introductory synthesis of relevant ed. studies and cognitive psych. literature in a very readable format. I am planning to replace my traditional textbook for the course and integrate the chapters from this book this semester. I hope my students enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks to the authors for putting together a lucid, up-to-date, and practically-oriented selection of these findings. My only nitpick would be the choice of the word "proven" in the title. I think anyone who has respect for Popper's approach to science balks a little at this term, especially in social science given the limits of our methods.

I was in classroom education for 20+ years and now I work with homeschool families. This book has been an excellent way to organize learning actions for my homeschool mom trainings and discussions. And for me... it has been a amazing journey into the research behind where different learning mechanics are most effective. I look forward to a second book :)

To have a resource based on recent, high quality research has been extremely helpful in the instructional reforms I'm leading at my institution. The best part is that it directly refers to the research in great detail while still being perfectly accessible to any reader.

This book serves as a good overview of HOW we learn. It is not necessarily a teaching manual although it provides clear examples of how to use each concept in the classroom. Each concept is backed up with sometimes over two dozen links to the research that stands behind each concept.

For example: D Is For Deliberate Practice. The book defines deliberate practice, explains how it works, summarizes the research, then provides an illustration of what it would look like and, just as importantly, what deliberate practice IS NOT. This book is a starting point for finding new methods to bring into your classroom. As a teacher, you should read it, identify a few that interest you, then dig into other resources that expound on that topic so you can use it in your classroom with the best results.

The book is a bit stretched. Since they insisted on using all 26 letters of the alphabet a few of the concepts are very similar to each other. However, it makes a for a light read that can help lead you into deeper topics that will make you a more effective teacher. It is not a "magic cure all" book.

Very comprehensive layout of available ideas about learning. One of the greatest strengths is discussing "risks" or areas where such general approach backfires. It is important to know the limitation or negative evidence, which contributes to deeper learning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good learning mechanisms book for educators
Reviewed in Canada on August 17, 2019
I bought this book for a graduate class in Educational Psychology. The learning mechanisms are well organized into each letter of the alphabet. The chapters are short and all but one are laid out in the same way. Every chapter also has a one page summary for easy reference. I will definitely keep this textbook for use in my classroom.

This book should be required reading for all teachers. It lists the pros and cons of all the strategies and doesn’t push a particular idea or product. Chapters can be read in isolation so it doesn’t require an all at once commitment. I’ve ordered a number of copies for my school. Now if I can just get others to read them!,,
