Drawing on interviews with the black survivors of Nazi concentration camps and archival research in North America, Europe, and Africa, this book documents and analyzes the meaning of Nazism's racial policies towards people of African descent, specifically those born in Germany, England, France, the United States, and Africa, and the impact of that legacy on contemporary race relations in Germany, and more generally, in Europe. The book also specifically addresses the concerns of those surviving Afro-Germans who were victims of Nazism, but have not generally been included in or benefited from the compensation agreements that have been developed in recent years.

This volume is an excellent resource, densely packed with well-documented data on a fascinating and neglected subject with which I have some familiarity. A few scholars have objected to some evidence (minor misspellings, etc.) that the author is not very familiar with the German tongue, but these criticisms are blown out of proportion and in no wise signal meaningful inaccuracies. I have seen the same general level of minor linguistic inaccuracies dealt with in a much more generous and respectful manner in other histories. It is possible that these criticisms have been leveled because of discomfort with the book's subject. In any event they are quite minor and unrelated to the factual content. Thus I have given the book 5 stars for the author's impressive accomplishments.

I've know about people of color during the Nazi Era for years. But after over hearing someone say that it was not historically correct to have a person of color in a production of the musical "Cabaret" while I sat in a Starbucks in Richmond, Va. the confederate capitol. My head almost spun around like Linda Blair, I waited until they finished their conversation. And gave then a history lesson about people of color in America and the world. So my purchasing of this book was to further my knowledge of this history. Thank You, Thank You, for such a wonderful book. Because if you don't know your history there is no future.
