Tattoos & Tequila: To Hell and Back with One of Rock's Most Notorious Frontmen Hardcover – September 23, 2010

So forgive me if it's a bit hard for me to slice open a vein and let my blood run red all over this page for you. I'll fight you or I'll f*ck you but chances are I'll be hard pressed to sit there and talk to you.
War stories. War wounds. I know, I know. Old rock stars fall hard. I'm forty-nine years old. I'm five-foot-nine, 170. The spandex is over. I've had three plastic surgeries. Still, who do you think gets laid more, me or you? But time does change a man. I ain't twenty-one anymore.
It's a miracle we survived at all. A bottle of Jack Daniel's and uncooked hot dogs do not make for a particularly well-balanced diet. We are all very lucky we didn't kill ourselves. It might look like we were trying to do that but speaking for myself, death was never my intent. I just wanted to feel good, you know? I was just looking for that kick, that high...
These days I've got businesses to run. I like the action. Something to get your heart pumping. Healthier than a syringe full of cocaine powder like I was doing back in '81 with my girlfriend Lovey, that's for sure...
But you got to admit...those days are a lot more fun to talk about..."

- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseYou know, I'm upping the average for this book. I really liked it. I learned a lot. How he built his voice. His thought on the business. In my opinion, I didn't think he trashed his band. He had his complaints that I think anyone would have, but he did say a lot of things that I would take as an olive branch if I was his band reading this.
Something I started to catch onto is it's hard to clamp down on the absolute truth with these books. He says one thing and his wife, or someone else, says another. Did he protect his ego? Was he telling the truth? Is that memory lost because of time and drugs? I just try to take things with a grain of salt.
I like Vince. I like how he was able to get the women he wanted despite being average (I think before avg because he doesn't look 5'9, but who knows). I'm in that field. I'm beautiful, but on the shorter side. I'm a singer with his roughly his range. He's not especially extroverted like me. For me, I learned a lot from him.
I feel bad a lot of his business and marriage have failed since this book was written. Ozzy was lucky to have met Sharon with enough time to boost his career. Sometimes lightning doesn't strike twice. I still wish him the best of luck.
I've read a lot of rock books. This one could be my top 5. Dirt was great, but I felt it was lacking in the music area. Maybe stuff most people don't care about, but I like to know how they and other's felt about their musical abilities. It's cool when they spot imperfections. I would really love to hear from whoever mixes Vince's voice. I've heard his isolated vocals and in wondering how, and why, they do what they do to his voice because I could totally hit those notes. Before, I didn't realize he, and others, used their falsetto
Great book. Better than the 4 star rating, but maybe not a firewall five. I picked this up because I didn't think Vince talked a lot in Dirt and left really inspired to get my voice in better shape. If you read these things: Good luck, Vince. Keep pushing to be what you want to be.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2011Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIn the world of you and me, a guy like Vince Neil is often looked upon by society as ... how to put this nicely, an addictive personality whose troubles are self-inflicted. But in rock-star world he's become kind of a heavy metal legend, and "Tattoos and Tequila" does a solid job of taking you into Neil's world and capturing his sordid exploits over the years. Self-help gurus are always ordering folks to "live in the moment," and boy has Neil done that his whole life -- in some cases to the detriment of himself and others.
Neil struck out into the world early at 17 (already a father by this point), leaving a household that seemed to have a loving
vibe but also a loose one. For me, it's always fun to read about Southern California during this time period, when people
deeply loved their rock 'n' roll music, specifically the sheeny heavy metal brand that was developing. Whether it was taking place in well-known bars on the Sunset Strip or in the backyard of some teenager's party (while the kid's parents were gone),
live rock 'n' music roll was a big part of young people's lives back then.
Regarding Motley Crue, Neil's onging bread and butter (though he has ventured out with other money-making projects and fancies himself a businessman these days), there is little love, or even that much respect, among the four band members. Based on his contribution to Neil's book, Nikki Sixx might like Vince a little bit. But only just a little. The other guys, Tommy Lee and Mick Mars, don't seem too fond of Neil anymore, and the feeling sounds mutual. On a positive note, it was cool of Neil to allow others who have been close to him in his life to contribute to his book. This includes his three ex-wives, a former band mate in Rockandi, Sixx, his parents and others. This hodge-podge of viewpoints actually kept the book more lively than it otherwise would have been. It's also possible that Neil himself just didn't have that much to say and needed others to assist.
There are a few contradictions in the book and some of Neil's memories may not be spot-on accurate, but the gist of his
story is evident throughout: He's a man of huge appetites who lead a reckless life and is now paying for it, while simultaneously trying to make amends. Like these sorts of biographies tend to operate, toward the end it all becomes a merry-go-round blur: travels, drinking, drugging, tragedies, rehab, remorse. Nonetheless, Neil is a smarter, down-to-earth, more emotionally driven guy then you might think. After years and years of doing what he's done, it never ceases to amaze me how, when you get down to it, road-hardened entertainers like Vince Neil actually possess a great amount of professionalism, drive and energy to just keep going -- despite what people may think of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI liked this book because it shows who Vince is, and that's what I wanted to get by reading this book. First it seemed like a bad writing, but soon I realized it's because this is transcribed from recorded interviews. Some of the Amazon customer reviews say that some of the content is redundant, but I think it's because the transcriptions weren't really edited. I assume Vince intended to be that way, like you're having a light conversation with somebody in a bar, rather than reading a history book. When people are telling a story, we tend to say the same thing over and over, right? It's a little annoying to read at first, but once I thought this may be what Vince wanted to be, I liked it because it really shows his easy-going personality. I've been Motley fan from the 80's, and I had a huge crush on Nikki Sixx. But when they fired Vince, they were so mean to him, calling him "pig" and "fat" in interview for MTV and magazines, and I started seeing ugly side of Nikki (and Tommy). I learned they were full of themselves. Since then, I was interested to hear Vince side of story plus to find out what kind of person he was, and this book is telling them quite well. Many Amazon reviews criticize his behavior and thinking process, but I think he's a generous person not to hide anything and reveal good and bad, knowing people who read this book will criticize him. I agree he's a dysfunctional rock star, but if I were in his position, I would be a dysfunctional rock star. It's just a crazy business, and they threw themselves in it in an early age. It's amazing they are still alive after the booze and sex and drug, but I'm glad Vince became a person who he is supposed to be, whom is not necessary the person I want to be friends with, but who cares? He seems happy.
