The illustrations are cute and the rhyming text is fun. My 3.5yo was off to preschool the day after reading this and I asked him which kid on the page he identified with and he did pick the boy the story is about -- the one who is scared. I know my son doesn't like new things (more so than even most kids) so I was find with this book. But if your child is not one to worry over preschool don't get it.
Also, I do feel the examples it gave about what would happen in school were quite contemporary. If I recall correctly, there was even a decent amount of diversity in skin tones, hair colors, names, etc. And a male pre-school teacher ... which my son has, so yay!

Good book to start the conversation about pre-school.
