—Nicholas P. Money, author of
Mr. Bloomfield's Orchard: The Mysterious World of Mushrooms, Molds, and Mycologists

-- Nicholas P. Money Published On: 2005-05-02

". . . Michael Kuo brings years of morel-hunting experience to his Morels. . . . Details go beyond most competing identification guides to cover how to look for them, the latest scientific research on how they grow and DNA-based classification of species, habitats from apple orchards to burn sites, and morel festivals and cooking competitions. Add color photos and first-person insights throughout and you have a pairing of research and field guide unparalleled in depth and accessibility."
Midwest Book Review

-- Diane C Donovan ― Midwest Book Review Published On: 2006-01-09

"Kuo's comprehensive monograph on a foolproof fungus of outstanding flavor should bring more pickers into the fields (alas). . . . His book will stand alone for years as the authority on natural history and gathering. He covers false morels, habitats, hunting and feasting, the addicts—theory-wise looney—including speculation on culture of this mysterious delight. . . . A book of wide appeal."

I will make this decision easy for you. Put this book in your cart and buy it. This author truly deserves your business, so much so that I will be purchasing Michael Kuo's other books including 100 Edible Mushrooms (2007). This book goes far beyond "look under Elm trees" and offers the reader a remarkable approach to finding a culinary delicacy that does not play by the rules and can be very difficult to find.

You can expect quality descriptions of many species within the Morchella genus with maps of their distribution, a surprisingly fascinating chapter on the False Morel (and why you should NEVER eat them), interesting history and taxonomy, hilarious personal reflections that will make you laugh, recipes, methods of preparation and preservation, detailed advice on where and when to search, all printed on quality paper stock with great color photographs. There is only one downside to buying this book, you will want to buy a time machine and fast forward to the end of April.

I love Michael Kuo. My boyfriend and I mushroom hunt obsessively and without this mans expertise, we would still be in the dark. We own all of his books. This book is well written, often hilarious, and very informative. Would love to foray with this man and discuss fungi.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book; so much so that I bought the "100 Edible Mushrooms" also written by Michael Kuo. The photography is excellent, as is the description of the mushrooms. He writes with a sense of humor and avoids getting too technical. If you are lookng for a keyed identification guide, I would not recommend this title; there are many others more suited for that. But if you are looking for a fun, yet practical guide, this is a wonderful choice. The author understands the passion involved in finding morels......

Nice photos, light read, good information for a novice morel hunter or a beginner.
We love everything morel and loved this book.

It is a nice addition for not scientific morel hunters. If you just want to learn and hunt morels it is a good start!

If you are looking for complicated scientific names and discussion - this is not for you.

Excellent mushroom book for Morel enthusiasts. Great pictures, information on finding, collecting, and identifying these fascinating and delicious mushrooms. Also some wonderful recipes. Michael Kuo can eloquently express the poetry of the experience of a special moment most of us hunters have had on some especially memorable day. I am a little torn giving this recommendation only because I don't want to encourage the competition on this Great Treasure Hunt.

great pictures. comprehensive content, that is even covering it's dna, morel festival, morel hunters, morel hunting season in the usa. author, michael k, has entertaining writing style and good humor that makes for an even more interesting reading. the pictures are of excellent quality, very educational book. there are recipes but the only thing i did not see was the morel's nutritional content.

Of course I'm interested in mushrooms, but it was the literature that has led me to read this book three times in a month. Totally entertaining book with a lot of information about the subject (eating mushrooms - well no, eating morels). I've read about 20 "field guides". I learned a lot from each of them but this book gave the pleasure of reading, and knowledge. Thanks for the great book.

Well written...the author is an english teacher...Photos are great and the entire book is a read. However, some of the details and descriptions are a bit vague for a novice...me.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about morels 101.
Glad I bought it.
