Purchase options and add-ons
Brannon and his team of “unusual crimes” investigators are still reeling from the aftermath of Risen in Kalanon, but now they must face a new monster on the loose. Tensions between Kalanon and Nilar are on the rise once more as Ylani and the King clash. Meanwhile, Taran’s past haunts him and the church may not be the sanctuary it once was. Monsters come in many forms and Taran knows this better than most. Once you’ve been a Child of Starlight, can you ever truly be free?
Failing to solve this new string of murders could cost the missing children their lives, Kalanon its future, and one of their team his sanity.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2021This second installment of the Kalanon Series carries on at the same action-packed pace as the first, with new and engaging mysteries afoot!
These twist and turn, yet fit deftly together, to leave the reader satisfied at the conclusion of this book - but still curious about what the next installment might bring (and I have been told, it's even better than this, so I look forward to finding out!)
I am enjoying that the characters are becoming more and more fleshed out, and I do like that the knowledge of the world (and their background) grows at a natural pace rather than feeling like a forced exposition.
(If anything, my one small wish would be for a couple of breathers to take in more of the surroundings themselves, but the description is still catered for - besides, as mentioned, this is an action packed series!)
Darian Smith is great at juggling the threads of a situation, to keep the reader on their toes. Nothing lingers too long or feels too slow, and each of the main characters are a pleasure to read more about.
He writes in broad brush strokes of action, and fills in the relevant parts with finer detailing.
So, if your thirst is for lashings of mystery, magic, fantasy, and adventure with a variety of intriguing characters, then do give this series a try!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2020Was not as good as the first book. The author kind of mailed it in at the end wrapping up the last little subplot. The last few pages were almost like they were told "ok you got 4 pages left lets wrap it up".
The mage / wizard is about the dumbest 400 year old ever as apparently has learned very little in their life except they want to go thru life as a sex addled fool and then whine how much they do when they are forced to actually do their job, it just makes no sense even in the context of now being given a young man's body.
The first book I thought was wonderful and a joy to read, this one was still pretty good but no where close to first book. I am not sure if author has given up on series which would be a shame but it has been a couple of years as far as I can tell sense they have written much.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2019I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this dark fantasy mystery series and the second book is just as fun and action-packed. It was a pleasure to be reunited with the stoic hero-turned-physician Brandon, who not only has another mystery to solve but also has the repercussions of uncovering treachery in the first book. There is a whole lot of story packed into this book with Ylani dealing with precarious diplomatic and family situations, Taran’s past returning to plague him, and I really enjoyed the storyline of Draeson’s attempts romantic commitment. The world-building is nicely developed too and I found the descriptions of Goela wasps and the idea of the Frost Wolf delightfully unsettling. One tiny quibble I had was that I would have liked the characters to come together a little sooner as I like their banter and the dynamics and interplay between the relationships. However, the climatic ending more than satisfied my desire to get the gang back together. Look forward to reading the next in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2018The second in Darian Smith's Agents of Kalanon series continues on from the wonderful world building and suspense of the first. A thriller/mystery/crime fantasy, there is something in this book for everyone. The main characters from the first book are back, this time with murder and witchcraft combining in the bizarre deaths of seemingly disconnected people, with ominous links to the disappearances of innocent children. Darian Smith is a master of the complex plot and unexpected twists. I also like that his heroes aren't perfect and his villains never two dimensional. A thoroughly enjoyable read and I look forward to the third book in the trilogy.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021Wow! I love this series. There are lots of twists and turns, tons of action, characters with complex motives that have fascinating back stories - just so much to love. The writing is polished and sharp, the dialogue believable. Highly, highly recommended.

Book two (Starlight’s Children) of the Agents of Kalanon Series by Darian Smith was mind-boggling, awesome,
Darian Smith has created some amazing characters—the most-developed and compelling characters were: King Aldan, Sir Brannon (King’s Champion, investigator), Darnek (son of Earl of Raldene), Magus Draeson, Taran (a priest), Master Jordell (Nilarian Ambassador), Fressin, Eaglin, Kreegin (Father of Starlight), Magistrate Gawrick, Latricia (Keldan’s wife), Shillia Vere (mayor), Mud (lost son of King Aldan), and Duke Roydan Sandilar (Keldan’s father).
Darian Smith is a remarkable storyteller. He takes you on an enthralling and dramatic mystery. It is a murder investigation involving the death of a royal member that takes the reader into a dramatic mysterious epic fantasy. There is a great deal of political intrigue and who did it. A person is murdered and Brannon and his team come to investigate. In another mystery, a ship was found where all the crew was dead and gold that was supposed to be on the boat wasn’t found. That was the more intriguing mystery. The investigation takes twists and turns. The most dramatic moments were (in no particular order): the fight between Darnec and Roydan; the death of Eaglin; when Prince Tomidan was kidnapped; and the stunning revelation that the man named Mud is long lost son of King Aldan—Claydan; when a ship was found with all crew dead and a missing shipment of gold; the death of Roydan; the revelation that the Father of Starlight Kreegin was responsible for the kidnappings, the missing gold, and Eaglin’s death. The first book was much better than this one which is why the rating dropped.
This book (Starlight’s Children) was suspenseful and mysterious. I look forward to the third book titled: Battle’s Legacy.
I give this book a rating of 3 stars.

A good story, likable characters, good world building. Look forward to the next in the series.
Kindle CustomerReviewed in Australia on November 16, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read
I don't know how the author knows so much about chemistry to make his world so believable but he achieves it again in this book. I loved this second book in the series even more than the first. Characters are well developed and the plot really well thought out. I love how each book is its own story but the author is building to a climax. Better than CSI because there's magic and other worldly factors at play. Really great read.
Patricia AuReviewed in Australia on December 3, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first!
I enjoyed this book even more than the first! Riveting fantasy mystery that builds on the world and characters in the first. 5 stars meant that I found myself sneaking moments to continue reading even while getting work done or eating!
