Denmark's foremost philosopher and religious writer, Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855) maintained a journal throughout his adult life that amounted to more than 7,000 pages of alternative drafts of published works, biographical events, musings, and outpourings. A precursor of the Existential movement and a major influence on modern Protestant theology, Kierkegaard confided to his journal further reflections on the ideas developed in his philosophical and theological works, and on his tumultuous career as an author.
The English periodical, The Tablet, declared that "there can be few books in English that admit the reader so intimately to a process of thinking on such a scale, at so many levels, so unflinching and direct." Indeed, the journals attest to the philosopher's lively imagination, his poetic powers of self-expression, and the brilliance of his intellect. I got through about half of it before capitulating to my boredom. This wasn't what I expected: I've tended to find Kierkegaard's ideas engrossing and inspiring. His journals, aside from a few quotable moments, were anything but. Perhaps angst is bound to be more engaging in the theory than the recounted experience...and perhaps the edition I tried, Alexander Dru's, suffered from poor selections. I'll revisit them, but for now I'm setting them aside, as instead of illuminating one of my favorite thinkers they've cast something of a pall. Deep down, I don't believe he really wrote them...or would like to think, anyway, that this frustration is exactly what he wanted me to feel.

Knowledge of how Kierkegaard used his key terms has spread, osmotically as it were, from language to language; and we have every reason to expect that the naive, unaided, desperately intuitive stabs of the early translators will be smoothed out now by loving hands.

Ouch!! Existentialism

The Soul of Kierkegaard: Selections from His Journals

What can I say? This book is complex and like the existentialist, a bit complicated and the answer does not always hit you in the face. The Author, did not grow up in the best of times, and all through his writings his message makes indirect reference to his life. The author is labeled as a Religious Existentialist as compared to "Camus" who is a noted "humanist existentialist".
The author, in my humble opinion and lack of love for this type of writing, did portray an abstract attack on why religion and faith should play an integral part in you life. This in comparison to the humanist, black is black and white is white. Camus's books,to me, is easier to read .His book, "The Stranger", is excellent and a little scarey
If you have a quiet place, no disruptions and at peace with your self, buy "The Soul of Kierkegaard",and I wish you alot of luck.
