- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2012I want to start by saying that this book may not be exactly a 5 star novel. BUT compared to the past few LKH books, this one is so much better that it deserves the extra star.
There is ACTUAL PLOT in this book! The case and scenario is original and not something thats been done before really in the series. Sure some part felt a little re-used but when you're 20 books in thats kind of unavoidable. There was not pages wasted explaining each man, and although most of the main men in her life are on page, it doesn't feel cluttered like the last few books have. The men who are there on page have a reason for being on page. For example Alex, Ethan, Crispin, Jason, and several of her other lovers do not appear on page at all this book. Dev, Nicky and Sin do get more pages than usual. It works. It makes sense and doesn't feel like people were left out for convenience, but that there was actual reasons why we didn't see them.
Dolph and Zebrowski are on page a lot! Thats always a plus.
THERE ARE ONLY THREE SEX SCENES IN THE ENTIRE BOOK!!! Any LKH fan knows that ever since Anita became a succubus, the amount of sex has taken over the books. Not the case here. The first 70% of the book has no sex in it at all. The last 30% or so does feature three sex scenes- but only one of them is overly long, the rest are pretty short and to the point.
Some issues that have needed to be addressed (like Asher being a growing problem) is finally addressed.
Overall, I have been reading LKH for 7 or 8 years now. I have personally been greatly disappointed with the amount of sex and (recently) the amount of tigers that have taken over the entire books. I am sad that the wereleopards around much (Where are Cherry and Zane???) but overall I really have to say that this book has been a positive and enjoyable change of pace from the last few.
I almost didn't buy it because of other bad review from long time fans. Now after finishing it, I just don't understand what people are complaining about so much. Is it Circus Of The Damned? No. But its definitely more close to the Anita books that we all know and love and than the last few that were so poor. I would say if you are hesitating about buying it, to get it, because I felt like it was really good.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2013So I got into the series pretty late in the game, 2008 or 2009. I started with the first book and finished the others off pretty quickly; I even had to drive 4 hours round trip because no store in my area had one of the books and I didn't want to wait for it to come in (I wanted it NOW!!!) THe last few books before this I was starting to get get a bit, not disappointed really, but disenchanted with the Anita Blake world. Anita just kept moaning and complaining, and being a biotch to her lovers, and then there was Richard. It just kinda got monotonous, especially with all the sex, sex, sex.
I had bought the 2 books before this for my kindle; i read them and was like, ok.... I had intended to buy this book when it came out, but for money reasons I didn't, and then I just forgot. I recently was thinking about the series and decided to check up on it. I was like, OMG, I can't believe I FORGOT!!!! Especially so since a new one is coming out next month.
I was weary about getting it though, because of the last few books. I read the reviews, and it's just split so 50-50 on 1 star to 5 stars, doing an good upside-down bell curve statistic in the middle. The negative comments about he content made me even more cautious. I held off a few days but I finally decide to get it the other day while i was walking on the treadmill and I wanted some entertainment. I also knew that I really needed to read this book to not be lost in the next, because I KNEW I was going to read it. I read LKH's blog about it and it sounds AWESOME (and VERY long, which is VERY good).
I started reading, and it was typically what I expected from the reviews, but also not. I let you read it if you are interested; it isn't really a disappointment if you liked the stuff from the earlier books. I definitely don't agree that the book is divided in half into investigation and sex; sex scenes don't span chapters like people have reviewed about. I didn't find the sex that inspirational either, though; I guess I just got tired of it from earlier books and just skimmed it mostly.
Anita's attitude was different than what people reviewed about, at least how I interpreted it, and I do understand people can interpret the same thing differently. I found her much more refreshing in this book than the last few books. Yes she talks about herself being a monster, but I didn't really see her worrying and moaning about it so much; to me it seemed more like she was accepting that she was one of the monsters now, although she was not happy about it, she wasn't going woe is me and annoying me about it like she had been.
Another thing, yes she had some concern about loving so many men; However, I wasn't the same type of whining about it that it was before. She isn't aghast that she has so many lovers anymore, it is more of a practical issue and an exhausting one of juggling emotions and time for each. This does not dominate the book at all, although it is briefly discussed a few times.
Overall I felt like this book was transitioning. It is more of a mix of the styles we have seen from LKH; you have more of the police stuff that was seen in the early books, but you also have more romantic and sexual elements of the book. The more romantic and sexual stuff does't dominate and take over the books like it had been, nor does Anita make you want to slap her silly with all her whining and complaining, instead of just handling the situations and taking them in stride.
I would really have like to give this 4.5 stars, but I though it deserved more than 4, so 5 it is! I was happy when I got done reading, and I couldn't put the book. It was exciting to have that back again in this series. I do think some things could have been done better, but oh well. I do think this shows a lot of potential for the next book. Zombies are making a come back!!! ;)

Jeff BonaparteReviewed in Canada on January 23, 20145.0 out of 5 stars The Anita Blake Series is Fantastic...
...AND so is this book. Laurell K Hamilton offers another look into Anita's troubled Relationships and abilities to be the Vampire's Greatest threat. The Executioner. As long as Ms Hamilton writes these books I for one will read them.

Amazon CustomerReviewed in Germany on July 7, 20123.0 out of 5 stars Naja trifft es...
KirstyReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 18, 20125.0 out of 5 stars It may also appeal to fans of the early books in the series
I've always been a fan of this series and this book was no exception.
This book is divided into two sections that reflect the split in how the series has progressed, and was written. The first half of the book is very much centred on Anita's police work as we head straight into a new case. This was reminiscent of the first 10 books of the series, where the plots revolved more on Anita's animating and Marshall work, I enjoyed reading about Anita in the field again as an interesting case such as this, has been missing for a few books now. The second half of the book reverted back to her various lovers and relationships, and was much more like books 11 onwards. Plenty of the sex we have come to expect.
It's well known that many of LKH's fans stopped liking the series at around book 11 due to the change in style of writing and direction. This is the first book in the second half of the series that may appeal to those 'original' fans, as it reverts back to some good all fashioned police and hunting work. Although there are quite a few sex scenes later on they don't dominate the book, and let's be honest it wouldn't be a LKH book without a steamy sex scene or two!
LKH has clearly started to resolve some of Anita's lingering issues, and this book did feel like the beginning of the end. It felt like there may not be too many more books before the series is completed. Anita is no longer controlled by the ardeur, she is feeling less guilty about the amount of men she has in her life, seems to be coming to peace with the idea that she is not able to love them all equally, or in the same way. She is also coping with her anger better and is picking her battles rather than letting her temper control her. It really felt like she had grown a lot emotionally in this book.
I also really enjoyed the section on Asher. His relationship with Anita and Jean Claude has been one of the most difficult and painful throughout the series, and I felt that the steps Jean Claude took to resolve this issue were necessary if a little sad. Asher is prime example to show that if you cannot love yourself, it makes it very hard for anyone else to love you too.
Overall another Anita Blake book that I loved! It won't be to everyone's taste, but LKH has definitely taken a step in the right direction to bring her older fans back into the fold.

As many Anita fans have said before me: I am saddened yet confident in my decision to say goodbye to the series.
