Purchase options and add-ons

Both American Indians and the pioneers knew and used many different plant species-for food, fibers, medicine, tools, and other purposes. This unique book is a guide to identifying more than 220 such plants. But it goes much further-it also tells the reader how to prepare, cook, and otherwise use them. Some of the dishes for which recipes are given have won culinary prizes. All have been tested not only by the author but also by her students and by journalists-who have been uniformity surprised and impressed.

The plants are organized by habitat communities. Description, photos, drawings, and distribution information are given. Where poisonous look-alikes exist, they too are illustrated. Much fascinating information about Indian uses of native and introduced species is included.

The author emphasizes conservation considerations; the aim of the book is to educate the reader about intriguing uses of the plants, and to tell how to gather and use the most palatable and abundant species without damaging the environment.

Great for a whole lot of great information about a important plants, but but pictures are very limited, so it needs to accompany a field guide. I tested this on a recent hike and it had the plants I looked up, but I recognized them because I knew them. The pictures were limited. Nevertheless, I tried to fine the plants in a filed guide and for some reason they were absent. So I have to recommend. The info was great but I the the quantity of plants addressed was maybe 1/10 or less of a field guide, so it can’t be your only book.

Not many pictures and I need all the help I can get .. Many drawings ... However a picture is worth a thousand words ...
I bought this book as part of my "Prepper" library so it will do for now .. After looking through the book it does have good info it just needs more pictures .... Even black and white pictures would be better than drawings ... The second edition is screaming for pictures ... I'm a very good photographer and would be willing to take the pictures and contribute them just to get the best book possible in the second edition .... Overall its a pretty good book and worth buying ...

I'll start by saying that the book is copyrighted 1977, it has very few color pictures, (basically a center portion with about a dozen) the rest are hand drawn and can be a little hard to navigate (if for instance you don't know anything about a plant you've found). But for the price I payed, and considering, if you're interested in book on this stuff you should have a plethora of other non-tactile non-portable resources you can use (internet), then this is a great buy.
I know what to stay away from and if Im confused I can pull this book out (280 pg) of the front pouch of my backpack and get "un-confused"
It's a solid field guide in my opinion.

One of the few plant books that I really use. You should get a full color plant book to help assist with identification.
