I saw this book, and read the title, and I thought to myself, how can anyone deny the holocaust? I did some research, and found to my surprise, that its not just a agitating few but a organization and a movement. These holocaust deniers have scientists and have tested samples and investigated gas chamber design . . . so I bought this book. I want to know who these people were any why they say what they say. I paid $15 for the kindle version, and that is the most I've paid for a kindle book, almost twice as much, actually.

The book is of simple structure, with chapters on different aspects, such as chronology, gas chamber design, the gas used and how it was tested for. It goes through not only each argument against, but also the deniers themselves. The authors use research, logic and personal eye witness accounts to debunk some of the deniers' claims. I felt they did an excellent job in all these areas, presenting not just research, logic and eye witness accounts but giving the back story, the historical context and the modern context. They lay everything bare, admit doubt when there is doubt and bluntly put holocaust myths in bright spot lights so that no one can say that those myths discredit the holocaust in its entirety and prove it never happened. It completely blew my mind that anyone could deny the holocaust ever happened, but after reading this book, I have a much more realistic view of people and their motives. Many of these people aren't crackpots. They are people who through their own motives, prejudices or hurt pride, deny something real as false.

One truly excellent aspect of the book, it the working skills it gives the reader. As the authors go through each Denier claim and prove it wrong, they also impart a series of questions to ask one's self when dealing with deniers of any ilk. They point out traits and arguments to look for and then list the questions to ask to illuminate true reason or expose faulty logic and prejudiced attitudes.

Truly a great book and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. I sat down and read it in two days straight.

The book is about Holocaust deniers, yet it is more than that. It looks at questions of historiography in general- who writes history, why they write it, and how they write it. The authors' writing style is of the absolute highest calibre. Like most History of Science guys, Shermer can tell a tale, and Grobman is also a skilled author. The book is never boring, even when it has a chapter or section on something which you are sure you will not be interested. It tells us all about the folks who are Holocaust deniers (although I would like to have learned more about Arthur Butz), noting that not all of them are psychologically impaired idiots. Some are well-educated, some are charming, some (David Irving) are skilled writers and researchers. Another point the authors make is that Holocaust deniers really know a lot about the Holocaust, and you can't beat them in a debate unless you really, really know your stuff. What holds the deniers together, of course, is their hatred of Jews & Judaism (which they call "the traditional enemy"!). You will really learn a lot from reading this book about the Holocaust, and you will learn it in a, there is no other word for it, "fun" manner. For those with any trepidation about tackling this subject you should note that its like you are not even reading a historical monograph- the book is that accessible. Once you read this book and ruminate on just how much evidence there is that the Holocaust happened, one really has to wonder about what in this day and age motivates certain folks to dislike Jews so much they would deny the undeniable. I can understand why Malaysians hate Jews- George Soros tried to ruin their economy to make a buck and they are a third world country which has no other Jews around to judge him against, but what excuse is there for Americans, Canadians & West Europeans? Given that money from our good friends in Muslim countries (and Venezuala) are more and more funding Holocaust denials, you need to read this book!!

This is the most comprehensive book yet to appear which seeks to refute the claims of Holocaust deniers and revisionists. It seeks to put the nature of historical "truth" in a semi-philosophical framework as well as tackling the empirical claims of deniers head on. There is a strong section attacking Fred Leuchter's so-called research on the bricks at the Auschwitz crematoria (no wonder no traces of cyanide remain after 50 years in the open air) and a thorough account of the nazis' own incriminating records and confessions. Will the book actually convince any Holocaust deniers themselves? Probably not. They will doubtless pin-prick the book, for example Heydrich's death at one point is wrongly given as 1943. And they will continue to maintain that Eichmann's confessions in custody were his last ditch effort to cooperate and thus save his life. As Sherman and Grobman make very clear, Holocaust deniers are ideologically motivated and devoted to rehabilitation of nazism. A final thought: the main media organ of deniers these days is the Internet. There is still scope for a detailed analysis of the content and impact of these hate pages. The authors have written a valuable book, but the debate (like it or not) will go on.

Historians are faced with three options when confronted with Holocaust Denial. The first is simply to ignore the deniers, thereby denying them the publicity which they seek. The second option is to expose the ideological motivation behind Holocaust Denial, and thereby unmask it as a modern manifestation of anti-Semitism. This is the path taken most prominently by Deborah Lipstatd in exposing the intention of Deniers but refusing to actually debate with them lest any academic credibility ‘rub off’ onto such opponents. While the internet has made the first option untenable, the second is still the preferred approach. However, there are those who feel that because the arguments presented by deniers may on the surface appear worthy of consideration, historians have a duty to confront and dismantle them. This is the method adopted by Michael Shermer and Alex Grobman in their book ‘Denying History: Who Says the Holocaust Never Happened and Why Do They Say It?’.

The book starts by exploring the methodology of Holocaust Denial and describes an important distinction between legitimate historical revisionism and denial. Simply put, deniers are shown not to play by the accepted rules of historical inquiry. Genuine history involves looking at evidence from a variety of sources and looking at the direction such evidence points to. Denial does the opposite: it starts with a conclusion and attempts to fit the evidence around it whilst ignoring that which contradicts the starting conclusion. Holocaust deniers do not follow the rules of historical scholarship. Why do they do this? The authors move on to explore this question, presenting a historical overview of the movement and information on its leading proponents. Shermer and Grobman present a group of loosely-connected individuals who are united by a shared belief in conspiratorial anti-Semitism. A cursory glance through the Journal for Historical Review—the leading Denial journal—makes this so apparent that one wonders why deniers so often bother to deny it.

The second half of the book focuses on the claims made by deniers, particularly the three ‘fundamentals’ which define the movement: Denial of the Nazi intention to commit genocide against the Jewish people; denial of an industrial-scale process to commit genocide, specifically the use of gas chambers; and denial of the death of approximately six million Jew. As the authors are clear to emphasise, no single historical document ‘proves’ any of the above, but all are known to be true based on the convergence of an overwhelming amount of independent evidence. While this available evidence fills volumes on library shelves, the authors present enough within these pages to conclusively demonstrate that denial of the above is totally contrary to the evidence. Many of specific claims made by deniers (e.g. that gas chambers were used for delousing) are shown to be false. If the evidence cannot be distorted or fudged, deniers are shown to be quite willing to engage in outright fabrication. Deniers are, quite literally, telling lies for Hitler.

Shermer and Grobman have performed a great service by writing this book. It is well written, clearly presented, and meticulously destroys the arguments put forward by Holocaust Deniers. It is doubtful it will change the mind of those convinced that ‘The Six Million’ is a hoax, but it will demonstrate to any fair-minded reader that there is nothing honest about those who seek to eradicate the past.
