This book gives the text of four Anglo-Saxon Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The paper and binding are reasonable but the type face is not very clear.
In reproducing an ancient text a publisher has several options:
(1) Facsimile
(2) Transcription using the same alphabet
(3) Transliteration into another alphabet
(4) Translation
At least two of these techniques have been used here to produce, at best, a fair but dull result. I would have preferred a transcription, but this is a transliteration into the Latin alphabet from the original Old English. Thus, several Old English letters are absent such as the thorn and eth. Both are replaced with "th". This book was originally published in 1848 and the current edition is simply a facsimile of that edition. Thus, it is a facsimile of a transliteration!
The edition is an uncritical text and the sources for the text are unstated but it is certain they came from the Bodlean library. There are no foot-notes, no explanations, and no introduction to the text concerning the colation methods, the editing praxis, etc. Just a bald text.
The text has been indexed with verse and chapter numbers corresponding to modern practice. I think a better critical (and ecclectic) edition would that published by the Early English Text Society. This also uses many more source texts than were available to Benjamin Thorpe in 1848
