Guts refers to risk-taking behaviors (not all of which are bad). Grit refers to determination. The Grind is our perseverance. This volume includes 12 testimonies from men from varied backgrounds who have experienced mental health crises directly and indirectly. Depending on the reader’s background, some testimonies will resonate more than others, but each has something to offer to the overall toolbox for mental wellness. That wellness and our preparedness for crises are critical now as our nations ride the COVID-19 wave and its social distancing.
I recommend it as a resource or reference book for the men in our lives. I also look forward to the subsequent volumes that are scheduled for release in each of the remaining quarters of the year.
The essays from men who have had suicide ideation, and when/how they began to turn their lives around, are amazing. An example is the story written by Greg, who had hit bottom. He went to his children’s room before leaving for work, “not knowing if I would ever come home to see them again”. His son woke up and whispered “Love you Daddy”. “It stopped me in my tracks”. At that point he realized he did not want his family to suffer.
Such honest and powerful stories from 12 men are mind-opening and should give hope to those suffering from depression.
This will be a series with additional practices to overcome hardships and dozens more stories to come. Share this book with those whom you care about. And watch for Volume Two in the near future.
