- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2011Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you were ever in an arena in the mid to late 80's with a hairband on stage... You must read this book! A fine piece of literature it is not. Instead it is written in a way that reflects Blotz speaking style, in every way. He spins story after story of the days he felt most immortal. To have lived a life of unbelievable fame and be the object of so much worship, must be a hard one to get over once it all stops. The cast of characters that grace the pages of this entertaining read, are stories and enigmas of their own. Motley crüe, aerosmith, WASP, among many others are mentioned in this time machine back to 1987. Characters such as Don Dokken are interesting in the fact that he is such a trsinwreck, but we never would have guessed. What seemed like such a glamorous and exciting life to all of us teenage wannabe rock stars, was really a tough, litigated, and hard driven life. Blotz makes very obvious references to the money others have made, the levels of fame they achieved and the breakout albums of other bands. Envy?? You decide. If you can remember where you were the first time you heard "round n round" or have jammed to "Lay it Down", this is a well spent $10.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2011Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHaving been a big fan of the 80s metal scene (I graduated in '87), I have been on a kick reading rock star bios. I just read Sammy Hagar's book RED, and wanting to read another... I chose Bobby Blotzer's TALES OF A RAT.
I remembered reading about it a year ago on a website (either melodicrock.com, or classicrockrevisited.com). Needless to say, I was pleased it was available as a purchase on my Kindle.
The book is best described as a conversation with the Blotz. It's like you're sitting with him in a bar somewhere (for 15 hours), and he's telling you first person a lot of his recollections. And he's got a great mind for remembering stuff, as he mentions in the book. Reading this tome is like experiencing the 80s rock scene as you live vicariously through him.
This book is not as well-written or well-researched as anything by, let's say.. Jon Krakauer (whose books are phenomenal). But like I said earlier... it's more like a conversation with a likable dude that was there when all of this 80s rock stuff was going on. Someone who was a part of it, and who had the charisma to make literally hundreds (thousands?) of friends with the movers and shakers of the hair metal scene.
I enjoyed reading the book. He mentioned stuff I always wondered about (Dokken, how they formed... how Don Dokken ended up in Europe back in the early 80s). He talked about the disfunctional family of RATT, and how those guys really struggle to keep the band alive. He gives us revelations about the other band members (I always wondered why Croucier never seemed to take part in any of the reunions), and makes it clear how difficult it is in keeping bands together when you have such differing personalities. He also goes into great detail about his personal relationships with women, and how he keeps literally picking the wrong girls to be a part of his life. Blotz is no saint, but you get a pretty good idea of what his personal character is like. He is actually pretty charismatic, and he doesn't paint himself as being totally not at fault. He seems pretty honest about himself and is fully aware that his strong personality sometimes gets in the way.
If you enjoy 80s rock, and you want a bit of an insider's view... this is a good book to spend time with. In my whole life I've only had two RATT albums... OUT OF THE CELLAR and INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY. I may have to pick up some more of the music now that I know more about the band.
Good job, Blotz. Let's see what the future holds for you, bro!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2011Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGood look into the workings behind RATT. However, Mr Blotzer seems a bit selective in his telling of the tale. Not only does he pretty much lambaste everyone in the band, he tries to present himself as being 'above it all'.
There's almost no mention of Jizzy Pearl, who helped keep the band touring, and thus allowed Mr. Blotzer to pay his bills and sleep indoors. What little he does say is not complimentary. And IMO, he seems to think of Robbie Crane (from Vince Neils band) as an interloper. He has no problem ripping Juan Croucier a new A**hole every time his name come up later in the book, when in fact all Croucier wanted was 20% of the band he helped create. That's the real reason Juan abstained from the reunion.
John Corabi isn't even truly discussed here. Guess Mr. Blotzer missed Robbin Crosby, but still, he helped keep the band alive during the 'lean years' after the reunion. JC is by far a better guitar player than Warren, and should have been given some kudos in this book. Instead, Da Blotz, as he is known, choose to make a comment about 'hired guns', and makes it abundantly clear that he & Warren own the RATT name.
About 'hired guns', Blotzer makes it clear his feelings for Pearcy (Original Vocalist). He insults Pearcy throughout, even commenting on how Pearcy never wrote song, never sang in tune, etc. Well, where was the musical output between Pearcy's departure, and the famous lawsuit? Simple, the songwriting talent is Pearcy, as evidenced by 3 Arcade releases & many other projects.
Overall, not a bad read, worth the kindle price. But be known this book is 50% truth, 10% out right lies, and 20% each assigned to revisionist history (ala' Nikki Sixx in 'The Dirt') & self ego masturbation.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2010Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseRegardless of what the stereotypical thoughts on a drummer are, they would be incorrect in this assumption of Bobby Blotzer. This book was a great read. It's written as if you are having a conversation with the guy. He is entertaining, knowledgeable and willing to share the behind the scenes portions of his life. The band stories and information he shares are honest and shared with a reader as if you are enjoying a beer with the guy. Told in a respectful manner.
So many musicians don't give you any financial details in an understandable way. Reading of the business of Ratt was quite insightful. I couldn't put it down and there were even some laugh out loud chapters.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot the best writing, or back stage pass kiss and tell, but an entertaining read. A quite personal insight into the author's life and relationships within his family and band. Sharing RATT stories and observations of the individual member dynamics as the years continue apart. If I could give this book a 3&1/2 stars I would! It's a good, entertaining read.
