With dizzying speed she finds herself attending Yasser Arafat's funeral, sharing a holiday dinner with a suicide bomber's family, tour-guiding Israeli friends around the West Bank, dating a Palestinian from a conservative Muslim village, being held at gunpoint and injured by a stun grenade, and witnessing the 2005 Disengagement from inside the Gaza Strip. The gripping narrative focuses not only on violence, terror, and politics but also on the daily rounds of house parties, concerts, barbecues, weddings, jokes, harvests, and romantic drama that happen in between.
From idyllic olive groves to Palestinian beer gardens, from Passover in Tel Aviv to Ramadan in a Hamas village, from rooftop parties in Ramallah to militant rallies in Nablus, the book is packed with suspense, humor, and unforgettable characters. Its seamless blend of travelogue, memoir, and narrative journalism ramps the average American up to a sophisticated, multi-faceted understanding of the Israel/Palestine conflict.
Funny, gorgeous, shocking, and galvanizing, Fast Times in Palestine challenges the way we think not only about the Middle East but about human nature and our place in the world.

Biografía del autor
Sobre el autor
Sigue a los autores para recibir notificaciones de sus nuevas obras, así como recomendaciones mejoradas.Pamela Olson grew up in small town Oklahoma and studied physics and political science at Stanford University. After graduating, she realized to her surprise that she didn't want to be a scientist after all and instead began bartending, saved money to travel, and landed unexpectedly in Palestine, where she became a journalist and foreign press coordinator for a Palestinian presidential candidate.
Her website is pamolson.org.
After returning to the US, she worked at a think tank in Washington, DC, trying to bring what she had learned to the halls of power. Eventually she became disillusioned, dropped out of the Beltway crowd, and began writing a book called Fast Times in Palestine, a chronicle of her searing education in the Holy Land and the incredible adventures she had along the way. It was published by Seal Press in March 2013.
She's currently working on a sequel called Palestine, DC, about the "special relationship" between the US and Israel, the rift between Hamas and Fatah, the assault on Lebanon in 2006, the situation in Gaza, and several other topics for folks who read Fast Times and wish to dig a little deeper.
Her writing has also been featured in the International Herald Tribune, CounterPunch, Israel's Occupation Magazine, Mondoweiss, and The Stanford Magazine among other publications.

When I purchased it, I didn't read the description closely enough and thought I was getting a novel. When I sat down to read it and realized my mistake, I groaned. I decided to give it a chance anyway and I am so glad I did. I was hooked right away. It's a memoir that reads like a novel. I could vividly picture the land she was seeing and the people she was talking to....and the horrors she was experiencing. This was so eye opening. It put a face to the crimes of humanity that have been occurring over in the middle east. It's more than war and politics, it's PEOPLE. We are so sheltered here in the US and take so much for granted.
I cannot fathom living in a place where the sound of gunfire in the background is so common, you don't even flinch anymore. Where you can't just drive across a state line to visit your loved ones. Where you are constantly in fear of losing someone you care about. Where you have to deal with such heavy oppression on a daily basis. Despite all of that, the people Pamela encountered sound so beautifully gracious and faithful. I can see why she felt compelled to return to them.
It is clear that if she has "picked a side", she has chosen to side with the Palestinians. That said, she shows how Israeli's suffer as well. It isn't completely one sided....it's fairly balanced. It doesn't come across as propaganda, as some reviewers imply.
Thank you for having the courage to share your experiences and for opening my eyes to the things that we DON'T read in the news or see on T.V. I look forward to more!

No matter where she was or what she was doing, it was always a good read and break. Needless to say, I've enjoyed immensely joining her in her travels shared through her writing and it's never been a dull moment.
In the Middle East, I've always had a "build a wall" and let the rest of the world deal with their own problems viewpoint but this book has brought a new meaning to "building a wall" in my mind. The sharing of her experiences in dealing with a "wall" and through the eyes of those who have to deal with one daily has made me think twice.
By bringing her experiences in Palestine and nearby areas to a central location via her book, I'm probably a better citizen of the world in understanding the day to day trials placed at those people's feet who have very little choice or options in the matter. Plus it's expanded my viewpoint of what the world is really like in this part of the world as a resident, not a tourist.
It was about time for her to take the next step and I'm glad she's taken that step seriously with this book.

Being an American of Palestinian background I felt I needed to get up on things (and possibly be able to share my learning with others )and this book--from an American woman's perspective--held promise. I was absolutely hooked from the first page. Pam Olson has done an amazing job of not only drawing the reader in to the difficult and volatile life of any one in the West Bank, but almost more importantly drawing the reader in to her amazing travels, her perceptions of the middle east, her ability to meet and bond with new people. I traveled with her at every step, enjoying her subtle comments and humor, being there with her in crusty situations, learning first hand of a culture and people she had before been fairly ignorant about(like many Americans.) The real shift in the book from riveting travel narrative comes with her very real involvement with people she meets and her emotional ride as she became invested in those people and the beautiful places they live in. She is clearly changed inside out from her experiences. There were many upsetting parts of the book--and she revealed what these upsetting things did to her personally, in poignant prose. Many times I had to put the book down and chill--then get back to it. The sad fact is so much of a devastating nature goes on under this occupation, that its a shock for anyone to think that these things can continue with "approval" by the good old USA. I recommended the book to my book club, we read and discussed it, and all thanked me for opening their eyes. Thanks Pam Olson for opening MY eyes as well.

Now here comes the however, the storyline is a touchy one and I feel it was very biased. Pamela Oslon is obviously very attached to the muslim people as a whole. This is perfectly fine, but her tale of being fair did not come through. Yes she threw a line in or two of feelings for the Israelis, but she never fully developed their side or their views of the situation. A sprinkle or two were done but it was not fairly portrayed.
She gives tales of events that happened in the Gaza or other areas but not through her own encounters and so there are some questions there on the validity of the stories. Interviewing others is not a true picture of her own experience.
Like I said, it was very easy to follow and very easy to read but extremely one sided. Some stories were writtne without developing the reasons for the Israelis actions for why they do things as they do. Look, noone is perfect, every tribe has their unfortunate representatives, however, to really see a situation for what it is would be better than protraying ones self as fair and balanced while giving a very one sided view.
Again, thank you Pamela Olson for sharing your adventures, I only wish they were truly fair and balanced. Perhaps you should visit with poor homeless Israelis that have no where to live and have no food due to the destruction caused by the people of Gaza and others. The two people are so similar, if only they can see past the horrors that have been created.

Fast Times is a travelogue, first and foremost. It details Olson's experience in a vastly misrepresented and misunderstood part of the world. Olson is very aware of the controversies surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and seems to deliberately avoid political statements, allowing her own experiences to speak for the themselves and the reader to come to their own conclusions.
If anything, Olson reaches a bit too far when she reflects on lack of communication and misunderstanding as roots to the conflict. She desperately wants to avoid blaming the Israelis and makes a point of presenting her Israeli friends' shock when exposed to the conditions in the West Bank. At the same time, however, that shock is being presented by a small town girl from Oklahoma, as if the person being shocked doesn't have access to the same books and internet that she does. Never mind that the Israeli lives just over the Wall.
Fast Times is an emotional book, and I imagine that it is particularly so for those who can relate to the author's experience. The conflict of the occupation is mirrored somewhat by the author's conflict as an American, whose government funds and protects the Israeli government, and whose struggle to face the everyday tragedies in Palestine is laced with the guilt of her own privilege.
I strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new perspective on the Occupation, whether you're new to the subject or an expert. It provides a unique lens through which to view the conflict, one that emphasizes the humanity and heartbreak of life in Occupied Palestine.

Was it going to be a superficial and disconnected travelogue written from a colonialist perspective of a pampered American girl helping the savage natives? On the contrary, this book was a breath of fresh air on many levels. I really felt it was two books in one. One part dealt with Olson's personal and humble experiences living and working in Palestine and grappling with a reality that conflicted with commonly held beliefs in American society. The second facet of the book presented a well-supported historical and 21st century perspective of the daily struggles of the Palestinian people from a global standpoint, yet this is not a boring history book.
As one who teaches English at the university level, this text was a pleasurable read with Olson's beautiful writing style. Her claims in the book are also well-documented and supported by credible research and reliable media sources. I've done extensive research on the Israeli/Palestinian situation and found this book to be eye-opening, and reading about the people and the conflict from the perspective of an American actually living in Palestine helps to fracture the misconceptions we have about this land.
Please give this book a chance before you dismiss it as being overly political and pro-Palestinian/anti-Israeli. The situation is extremely complex, and we need to educate ourselves on the situation instead of simply relying on simplistic, pre-conceived notions. Olson's book is a captivating take on a magical land that we actually know little about.

She started on a backpacking trip during a time when she was questioning her beliefs and taking time from her university studies. She decided to travel in the mid east intending, for reasons of cost, to omit Palestine and Israel. Through chance meetings with and Israeli and a Palestinian on the Red Sea coast, she ended up in Palestine, where she introduced her Russian-Israeli to a Palestinian who spoke Russian, having been studying medicine in Russia. She writes very well and her description of the hospitality of the Palestinians she met and lived with, and of their life under occupation is fascinating and eye-opening. I've since bought copies for several of my friends... who are similarly impressed. This is the intriguing and riveting story of a young American woman from Oklahoma and her two year adventure living, volunteering, and working in Palestine.

Therefore I have seen the situation for myself which is of course very different to how our media presents it. I have to say without reservation that this is one of the best books I have read on the subject. Books on subjects like these can be quite dry or partisan; however this book does not fall into any of those traps. Pamela Olson somehow manages to convey exactly what is going on with quite detailed commentary on the historical and political landscape of the region without compromising the rhythm of the narrative. Most importantly of all she does this with grace and humility and with her humanity intact. This is no mean feat when one is living with those in an occupation and witnessing the daily brutality that ensues on both sides. I have urged my friends to read this book and urge you to do the same. With an open heart and an open mind. We see news reports with one point of view, which are then contradicted by another - it is confusing. Pamela Olson sets out - with no agenda - to travel outside her homeland, the United States. Her travels in Palestine and Israel, the people she meets, the places she visits, the events that take place, form the basis of this book. Her account is entertaining, lively and intelligent. Olson is a young 21st century American woman who strips away the dense, complex 60+ year-old-history and politics to tell what she saw, as she saw it. Not a politician nor an ivory towered intellectual, she has produced a refreshingly modern account of life in Palestine today with honesty - all too scarce a currency in the modern Middle East. The long running Palestinian/Israeli conflict has been with all of us for most of our lives yet few understand what is going on there.
