By and large this book is an easy read for experienced admins who want to learn about the new features found in Server 2012, although I would say it is geared more toward the novice than the seasoned professional. The writing style is clear, and Mr. Tulloch does a good job of backing up new concepts with examples and illustrations. I found the section explaining IPv6 especially helpful - though it didn't dispel all of my fogginess in understanding the new protocol. Also, there is a heavy emphasis on PowerShell throughout the book that may be helpful to those already experienced with it.

My biggest gripe is that the book has a lot of errors, which can be somewhat expected from a new book. However, the volume of errors is still quite striking from what I would expect from a Microsoft book. Most of the errors are minor and can be picked up right away, but some are more serious and required me to reread the paragraph several times before realizing either that opposite terms were swapped or the wrong term was used altogether. The most glaring errors are found in the review questions sections at the end of each section. Many of the revealed answers are wrong, which can be especially frustrating. Speaking of the review questions, many of the questions can be quite obscure and appear to pull from material not found in the book.

I realize that the erata is made available online, but that shouldn't be a license for sloppy editing. Given the many errors, the frequency at which one would have to check back against the online erata would be tedious to say the least.

I would have given it four stars had it not been for the errors, and five stars had it been more geared toward exam prep.

I read this book two times and pretty much knew everything in it and I still failed the exam the first time. Its a good introduction book for those looking for a quick start, however, in terms of certification you will need to add TechNet articles, another book, practice exams, etc. CBT Nuggets are great.

If you want to actually be able to pass the test don't count on using just this book. I also read the exam prep guide and even between the two books there are still plenty of exam questions that you will not find the answer to in either book. Multiple study materials, a good lab environment to install and configure and run through all the commands in the various topic areas is a must.

Be wary that this is a basic foundation for the 70-410. There is a lot verbose information that is not covered on any Prometric Server 2012 70-410 exam. It has a wealth of knowledge-based info that will definitely improve your chances of passing. Only supplimental practice exams, training, experience, and labs will accentuate your ability to overcome the challenges of Microsoft exams. If you have background in server administration, you will golden concerning this exam. Newbies, don't take any Microsoft exam anything other than a major challenge. Besides knowledge in the fundamentals, you will have to realize there will be grammatical trickery looming. Good book for covering most of the fundamental material.

I have followed Mitch from his Windows newsletter for quite some time, the book itself seems relatively good my biggest complaint is that I paid $40 and the print is barely readable! How was this book even passed through quality control at the printers? Most of the screenshots are so light you cannot read them and first half of the book is printed with dark enough ink while the latter is very very light. As far as I am concerned this book is defective, I imagine I will have to return it but not sure if I should bother replacing it with another copy that is also unreadable? The printers dropped the ball big time, this is unacceptable.

I have read this book from beginning to end for class. I think there are some good things here, but the explanation of powershell is usually a little convoluted. I dont know if the paper back is better instead of the kindle version, but the book seemed fine. I felt I learned a bunch, but also that things were poorly worded. I do wish the review questions were a little less wordy. They seem to help ok. The main thing I wish is that these books would come with a digital version. I like the paperback for reading but the digital for tests and labs. I know that isnt really their problem, but it would be nice. Even if you could grab the digital for like $5.00 I would do that.

Good book overall.

very informational. There are a few typos, and a few of the questions seem to have incorrect answers, but I expect that with a 1st edition.

Example of incorrect question/answers seem to happen when asking a question like "Which of the following is NOT correct" then the answer key marks the ones that ARE correct, with explanations. The explanations are all right, but the answers themselves say "incorrect" and "correct" in the opposite spots.

This guide is a good companion to studying for the 70-410 and will help familiarize you with Windows 2012. Hit most of the areas that are on the certification exam and the lesson/chapter end tests and labs helps the information sink in. I got the most benefit out of this book when I had a test lab to practice some of the concepts they go over in the book.

I would recommend a more rigorous practice test system than this book offers if you want to pass your test :)
