The strength of this book lies in the author's deeply personal and compelling narrative of her life. It is not only about singlehood, but also about battling chronic illness, facing past wounds, finding hope when nothing makes sense, connecting to the divine, and building community in the most unexpected places. I encountered this book in a difficult period in my life. Hurley's vivid account of her experience of disenfranchised grief and depression helped me to recognise and give a name to these conditions that I myself was facing at that time. To me this book is quite well balanced: while being relatable and funny, Hurley discusses important issues that (christian) single women face as well. This is much needed in our culture where singles are often shamed or pressured into relationships.

Disappointment Sucks. There, I Said It.

I know that I, for one, just wanted the wife, house, two or three kids. The church I was in throughout my 20s pushed that as the Normal Christian Life, and yet discouraged me from taking any steps to GET the Wife, as "The Lord would bring her in due time." I did everything I was supposed to do, and found myself constantly alone.

This book has really gotten to the heart of how I'm feeling, and given me permission to grieve over the children I didn't have and may now never have. It hasn't always been an easy read, but it's been cathartic, it's been healing, it's been NECESSARY.

I loved this book. I so appreciate Kate's openness and honesty. Reading this book as a single, I appreciated the validity of just wanting to rant about the challenges and sadness that can come with singleness. I also appreciated Kate's push to embrace something, or rather someone larger than our current circumstances and focus on the love of a creator who made us for intimacy, and that's a good thing. I'm still wrestling through and praying through Kate's advice, "If you're not careful, your expectations will steal away your joy." Thank you Kate for writing a book that I could connect with on such a real level.
