Yeah, this is one of the best books that I read that could be said to fall vaguely into the self-help category, but it way less stupid. The message is actually fairly simple: Chill out, Rome wasn't built in a day, You can't hurry love. In my case: Retirement is a major transition. It takes time. Don't beat yourself up over not knowing what to do.

I read TRANSITIONS: MAKING SENSE OF LIFE'S CHANGES By William Bridges many years ago -- I'm guessing probably when it first came out. I was in my early 30s. My overview: it explains how periods of time between "the end of something" and "the beginning of something else" usually brings turmoil, yet new paths and opportunies to grow as an individual... and most importantly a way to cope when you're living through that period of "in between". Birth of a baby, new job or losing a job, death of a loved one, moving, health issues, anything you can think of that impacts your life in any way -- big event or small -- we all go through these periods of "change"... it simply cannot be avoided. I can state, unequivocally, that reading this book so many years ago was a critical aspect in allowing me to be the strong person I am today. I highly recommend reading it, as it applies more today than ever!

This book is exactly what I've been looking for. A very down-to-earth readable book for everyone . . .not some book with big words and psychobabble. It's for the everyday person who is going through a "transition," also commonly referred to as "change," in their lives and are psychologically muddling through. Maybe I was looking for some kind of validation, maybe it was some kind of guidance, or maybe it was just plain knowing that I was not alone in my feelings of being lost . . . and I found all my answers here. No, it didn't cure all my ills; that is up to me. For me, the book nailed it right on the head: "Change" is what happened; i.e., loss of a job, loved one, empty nest, the "fact of the matter." "Transitions" are your feelings you're dealing with as you wade through your life journey. I would HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone "grasping" at straws" at any point in their life . . . it's for us simple folk. You docs go get your own book!! :)

A classic on the inner psychology of life transitions. I read this at a point of great change in my personal life, and it provided a huge amount of context and solace for what I was thinking & feeling at the time. The perspective I gained from reading allowed me to understand a very large arc of my time here. For me, this book was truly profound.

Bridges spent a lot of time meeting and talking with others going through transitions as he was also undergoing a massive period of change in his own life. The writing is very good, which is not surprising given that Bridges used to be a university professor of writing.

In 2014 I began the ending of my old life and journey of my new life in 2 ways. The past 3 years I have been in Transition, and continue to be in the neutral zone. I enjoyed the insights of this book on the process. I really liked his examples in classic literature to help explain and personalize his points. Not too much psychobabble. As a Christ follower and Bible believer I also liked his approach to religious systems. The truths or nuggets he suggests can easily be seen in a Biblical world view, the original Author of death and rebirth.

OK, Way back when....in the 80's, William Bridges published this landbreaking book. I read it then and loved it and have hauled it out to read to my daughter who is now 50. I've ordered the 25th anniversary update. Heck, after all that time, I can't wait to ready what Bridges added to the update.
Colossal thoughts and his writing his down to earth. Frankly, ivory tower psychology doesn't work too well when wading through life's transitions.
Bridges has written a true winner. by the way,a the original edition is still absolutely spot on after al these years.

I recently got laid off from my job of 10 years and was in a depressive state of mind. I was anxious and worried and felt like the world was turning against me. It was rough. A friend recommended I read this book and within the first few pages I knew this book was speaking to me. It's kind of obvious stuff that nobody ever really thinks about, and this book dives into it pretty deep. So thankful for my friend who recommended this - pretty sure it saved me from the looney bin.
