After years of hardship and difficult marriage, Garrett Maupin died in 1866, leaving Martha alone on the frontier with her young children. About the Author

Janet Fisher grew up on the farm her great-great grandmother Martha bought almost 150 years ago. After earning a master’s in journalism with honors from the University of Oregon, she taught college writing and wrote freelance for newspapers. She lived and worked in San Francisco, Kalispell, Montana, and other places, including several cities in Oregon, showing a trace of the Maupin wanderlust. Two of her historical novels were Pacific Northwest Writers Association contest finalists. She recently returned to Martha’s farm along the Umpqua River in southern Oregon and became the second woman to own and operate this family treasure.

True story but reads like a novel

A fascinating trip back in history. Author Janet Fisher has crafted a compelling story of her ancestor, Martha Maupin, based on meticulous research in often-sketchy records. Unlike many "true" stories, where the author feels compelled to shoehorn in every detail s/he unearthed, Fisher weaves historical information seamlessly into the tale without interrupting the story flow. It reads more like a novel than nonfiction. The reader tastes the dirt and feels the blisters on Martha's feet as she trudges the Oregon Trail. The major characters are fully developed, flawed yet appealing. The human spirit and courage shine through, giving an authentic sense of the dangers early pioneers had to face and overcome.

An entertaining history lesson and enjoyable read.

Interesting story written by Janet Fisher about her great great grandmother and big family. Janet did much research going back so many years, the travels, hardships and keeping the home in the family for so many years. My family home in Nebraska had been in the family lacking about 4 years to reach it 100 year.
I can remember my grandmother speaking of the many hardships, good times, etc. so can understand the research that went into this book. Well written and enjoyed to the end. Thanks Janet, it was nice meeting you at the Portland, Oregon Book show.
