Ender's Shadow explores the stars in this all-new novel...

At the end of
Shadow of the Giant, Bean flees to the stars with three of his children--the three who share the engineered genes that gave him both hyper-intelligence and a short, cruel physical life. The time dilation granted by the speed of their travel gives Earth's scientists generations to seek a cure, to no avail. In time, they are forgotten--a fading ansible signal speaking of events lost to Earth's history. But the Delphikis are about to make a discovery that will let them save themselves, and perhaps all of humanity in days to come.

For there in space before them lies a derelict Formic colony ship. Aboard it, they will find both death and wonders--the life support that is failing on their own ship, room to grow, and labs in which to explore their own genetic anomaly and the mysterious disease that killed the ship's colony.

Shadows in Flight is the fifth novel in Orson Scott Card's Shadow Series.

Many people have complained that the Ender series has gone the way of all series - each entry lesser than the last. However, I think those people look for the wrong things in their fiction. As such, Shadows in Flight has disappointed many - but I found the book incredibly moving, and beautifully written.

The Ender series has been marked from the beginning by extreme shifts in tone and subject. The first novel is a Heinlein-esque (though much more philosophical and literary than its famous predecessor) military science fiction young adult novel, followed in succession by an anthro-scifi novel, a philosophical scifi tome, and something that is...really hard to describe (but lovely - Children of the Mind is probably one of my favorite sequels). Card's Shadow series is much more uniform - though still something of a shift from the Dickensian scifi feel of the first parallel novel to the just moments in the future game of Risk that characterize the last three novels of that series. Now that each series has concluded, Card has been wrapping up various ends of both series with linking novels - Ender in Exile ties up several characters and points from both series, and now we have Shadows in Flight, which attempts to further bridge the 3000 year gap between the two (and, happily, develop heavily a concept hinted at in Xenocide and then more substantially in Children of the Mind - and given that the book tying from this one to after Children of the Mind, Shadows Alive, will hopefully grow out of the interplay between these two, I'm extremely excited about both this book and the next).

While I thought a bit of excessive "previously on" (though perhaps necessary for the non-Ender/Card-completist, unlike myself) marred the beginning, and there were a few too many references to other works Card is working on in this universe (particularly the Formic Wars series, the 100-year-prequel to the entire metastory of disastrous First Contact), Shadows in Flight delivers exactly what I wanted: a look at the consequences of being a hyper-intelligent family. Not to mention a fitting send off to my favorite character in the universe.

Each of the four characters lives sharply in connection to each other and in their own heads. The events which surround and sometimes overtake them play believably, and most importantly, Card manages to examine the central conceit of his famous series - what does it mean to be a child with the reasoning powers greater than most adults. He achieves this by having, for once, an adult who is as brilliant as the children - Bean's struggle to parent his hyperbrilliant offspring are tragic, hilarious, touching, and in the end, limpidly beautiful. Ender, Carlotta, and Sergeant all struggle to find themselves and the right thing to do as they hurtle at near-lightspeed towards an impossible-seeming future - which is cut short by the appearance of a mysterious ship.

As various early aspects of the Ender Universe open up with the new Formic Wars comics and novels, this side of the universe is drawing to an end. Fortunately, it appears that Card is being as careful with the resolution and send-offs of his favorite characters as he is with showing the beginnings of others. I sincerely hope that Card is able and willing to finish the final volume (at least chronologically) in the series with Shadows Alive, which I hope unites my two favorite strands of his work - the computer Jane and Bean's children.

I'm a long time Ender fan, and found this book very enjoyable and fascinating.
the characters are, as always, very well written, and the plot very interesting

my only problem is how little of this great story there is...

    **Minor Spoiler**

after waiting 4 years of waiting and paying 15 bucks i really expected a little more than 10 chapters, 4 characters and 2 spaceships....

it would have been great to have a thicker plot. the book could have continued after the point it ended or nay add some parallel plot line

the only reason i gave it 4 stars is the fact that after the anticipation i got a book that i finished in a day, even though English is not my native language, and i don't read that stuff...

i'm really looking forward for Shadows Alive witch should tie up both the Ender series and to Earth Unaware (The First Formic War)

thumbs up for the quick international (Israel) delivery, i got it faster than the minimum time in the shipping times table

One of the things I really like about OSC's novels (apart from superlative character viewpoints and conflicting moral dillemmas) is the plausible descriptions and creative weaving of worlds as well as creature/aliens that populate his universe (Enderverse).

It is the latter in this case so much so that you can appreciate the novel in many different levels. For example:

    a) The dynamic between Bean's three kids and how they are likely to think and act being not only superintelligent but also being holed up in a ship for years without outside/physical human interaction.

    b) Answering what is happening to Bean as he's getting older and bigger beyond his body's ability to adapt, and the race toward solutions for their "condition"

    c) Revelations into details (more details than ever explained) about the Formics, and how, a lot of what the human race knows about them (and what had thus far been put forth in existing novels) are either missing or downright mistaken

    d) Like other OSC novels, a fresh reboot on our preconceived notions about how alien planets and technology works. And how different they are from the way we would do them. Instead of thinking in terms of what a human would assume, are instead fresh insights on how aliens would actually accomplish things, including architecture and engineering.

... Basically all these themes and more in a book that many here diss as being too light or shallow, which is just plain wrong. Many people seem to want long books just for the sake of extending their entertainment time instead of getting the full value of a good story regardless of length.

This novel is not only concise but gets to the point without the fluff most other books waste your time with. It's a full book and while it leaves room so you can be sure it's made to pre-sell future sequels, it is complete for the story it tells and adding more stories to it would have just been an exercise to waste your time in reading (looking at you, George RR Martin).

This gets its well-deserved five stars and I can't wait for more new concepts from OSC.

5.0 out of 5 stars not so that they will still love, respect
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 21, 2015
A lot can be said about the parents observing the children only...
Raising your children not with yourself in mind at the pivot, not so that they will still love, respect, and honour YOU in your last years, but still getting this as a 'side effect' of teaching and showing them how to live and work in community - lots of 'parents' and 'children' will not recognize themselves in the characters but will still want to have been like that.
Being also able to appreciate when your children start making tough and responsible decisions WITHOUT you, to be relieved that you can really trust their decisions without having a say in them - a big part of the proper parent's job.
A provoking but thoroughly delightful delightful book, which actually benefits from being so short!

5.0 out of 5 stars a great closure

Finally, the Bean's arc has it's true ending, a great closure for a great saga.
I prefered Shadow's to Ender's, but only because I read them later ^^
This book is short, the script is simple, it's really a direct ending, but we all read the 4 previous books and their many parallel stories, we had enough mini-arcs joining together, this book is for Bean, and it's legacy.
    Thx OSC !
