BOYZ N THE HOOD is the critically acclaimed story of three friends growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. An amazing story that feels so real

I started watching this movie while on an airplane, and It was so good I had to turn it off so that I could finish it in a more enjoyable environment.

This film made cuba gooding jr a star, and further establish Lawrence fishburn. It tells the story of three poor African American kids growing up south central los angeles. The story feels so real, and the characters are extremely well developed. This is not one of those movies where poor kids overcome adverse environments and go on to become doctors or work for NASA. If you want a movie with a happy ending, don't watch this because just like in real life, these kinds of stories rarely have happy endings.

John Singleton directed this film and became not only the first African American to be nominated for the best director Oscar, but also the youngest person ever nominated.

3 views of black male life in the inner city

Boyz in the Hood was John Singleton’s first release in 1991. It presented three visions of black male life in the inner city. This was a pressing issue at the time because as the opening sequence said 1 of 21 black men were being murdered at the time, often at the hands of another black male. That needed to stop, which was why there was a close up of a stop sign.

The three main characters represented the different paths for black men.

One was Cuba Gooding Jr’s Tre Styles. He had both parents even though they were separated. He did good in school and wanted to go to college. His father Laurence Fishburne, as Furious Styles taught him about African history and black pride and continued to preach to him into his teen years. Fishburne also tried to instill discipline in Gooding, something that many of the other kids never got at home. That’s something Fishburne told him when he was growing up. The point being that young men needed male role models. He was tempted to join in on the neighborhood’s violence, but his upbringing stopped him.

Morris Chestnut as Ricky Baker was a high school football star who believed that sports was his ticket out of the ghetto. He gets recruited by USC, but he doesn’t have a vision for his life outside of football. He also struggled with his SATs to be eligible for a university. He had a baby and gets killed in a drive by, Singleton’s way of saying that this was not a good way to lift up black men.

Finally Ice Cube as Doughboy Baker was Chestnut’s half brother who cared about his friends, hanging out, and all the trouble that entailed. His mother not only neglected him, but berated him from an early age taking out her frustration with his daddy on him. She also liked Chestnut much better because of his football skills. He represented all the boys that got caught up in the hood, and had no future besides that. That included going in and out of jail which started when he was a little kid. Their life was about survival, while they also perpetuated all the problems of the community.

It is a very good movie, it has a lot of cussing in it but it would not be a gang related movie if it didn't. it is base on a true story of the gangs in Los Angeles. I love the movie and the actors that are in it, because they lived in the neighbor hood where the gangs were at when they were growing up. Some of the actors in the movie was really in the hood in real life. And now they are dead. But Ice Cube and Cuba Gooding JR. are really good in this movie. It is kind of sad at the end of the movie, to think that is how the gangs are living in this day. I would recommend this movie to anyone who does not mind the violence and the language they use.

Had to buy this to show my 2 teenage boys what hood life wasn't like in the 90's. I love this movie. As a white boy growing up in early 90's LA suburbia, its a nostalgic gem of what Hollywood puked out for us white folk to base our misconceptions of inner city life in the 90's. I only could wish for a sequel, oh wait, everybody dies....nevermind.

Probably one of the best films about life in the Ghettoside and specifically, in South Central LA. Being a resident of the Northern Long Beach area, and spending much of my time down in LA writing, I can say that this film paints nearly everything out to perfection. From the characters, to the dialect, and the scenery...it doesn't get more raw and real than Boyz n the Hood. One of my top films of all time due to its capacity of telling a story so simple, yet providing it with so much strength by depicting the lives of three black men, from their innocent boyhood...into the transition of their young adult reality of life in the hood at the time...and hell, even now. It's a timeless story, that even now becomes timely with everything going on concerning black homicide rates. It's Drama, it's Love, it's Action, it's Coming-of-Age, it's Life. Just like their awakening realizations as they grow in the story, we grow with them by its end, becoming awakened too of the tragic reality this life holds just miles, maybe even streets, away.

Great performance! Boyz N The Hood takes place in L.A. through the 80's/90's when gang violence was at it's highest! This movie is inspiring but at the same time a very sad ''realistic'' film. I finally got see to this movie and it was worth it! It was nice seeing young Ice-cube and Cuba Gooding.
25 years old and still holds well!
