This book documents the development and delivery of the Silverplate B-29 bomber, the remarkable airplane with capabilities that surpassed those of known enemy fighters of the time and was employed to release the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945. The basic history from conception to successful development is set forth in the early chapters, which discuss the then secret work of the 509th Composite Group. Subsequent chapters discuss the Los Alamos test program, Silverplate B-29 combat operations, the Air Force bases from which the aircraft operated, accidents associated with operations and details of the atomic bombs carried. Concluding chapters give special attention to the members of the 509th, who were responsible for dropping the bombs and whose efforts brought an end to World War II, provided the backbone of America's nuclear deterrent force in the years after the war, and opened the Atomic Age.

The book examines how, along with the design and development of the atomic weapons, the US military was confronted with how the weapon would be delivered to the designated target(s). As the bombs were developed their size and shape kept evolving, which presented the problem of what aircraft could deliver the weapon. Once the choice of aircraft was made, the constantly changing shape of the bombs presented challenges in changing the aircraft's bomb carrying capability to accommodate the weapon.
The early chapters detail this evolution in design change, the decision to remove armament and armour to allow height and speed and changes to the aircraft in terms of improved engines, reversible propellors and constant upgrades to the bomb bays and mechanisms inside to carry and drop the bomb(s).
The book then examines both wartime missions where the two types of bombs were dropped and the post-war trials at Bikini atoll.
A chapter is devoted to each aircraft of the 'Silverplate' design and its postwar derivative 'Saddletree'. All these aircraft were eventually retired and their ultimate fate was the scrapyard. Only three aircraft remain, the two most famous-'Enola Gay' and 'Bockscar' and 'The Great Artiste'-the only aircraft to have flown both wartime atomic missions; however the original 'Great Artiste' was damaged in a postwar landing accident and scrapped, this third aircraft is actually another Silverplate aircraft.
In summary a very well researched and written book, I enjoyed this book immensely and was captivated by its wealth of detail and photographs. The information presented is very extensive down to how each type of bomb was loaded into the aircraft and the assembling of the two wartime bombs in a hut on Tinian Island. Well done, Richard Campbell!
