Exercise your brain while you uncover some pithy food for thought. Cryptograms are substitution codes--every letter in the code has been replaced by some other letter; you try to find which letters stand for which others. Every cryptogram has a different substitution system. Some hints: Start with the shortest words. Break down long words into prefixes or suffixes. Look for word containing an apostrophe. A chart gives you hints for three letters in each puzzle. The more you solve, the better you get. It’s like this:

Love this book. It’s definitely challenging. There is not a lot of space to write and make errors so you should have extra plain paper. Also, not a fan of all the hints being on 1 page in the front. The back and forth just seams a little excessive.

I like this cryyptogram book because it's spiral bound which makes the book easy-to-use. There is plenty of space to work out each puzzle and to erase if needed. The print is very easy on my eyes, and puzzle hints are in the front of the book which I really like, while solutions are located on the back pages.
Best of all, the puzzles themselves are fun to read once solved. I also think there's a very good mix of puzzles as regards to difficulty level.

I've been doing word puzzle of all kinds since I was a child. This book, edited by Olivia Carton, is BY FAR the best I've ever had. The puzzles are challenging AND fun. The format is GENUIS: numerically listed (1-477) Hints (NOT puzzle numbers) available on the first page with numbered puzzle solutions at the back of the book and each puzzle includes the numbers of Hints on the front page.
This allows for the preferences/abilities of ALL solvers: from no clues to up to 3 clues to full solutions - solver's choice. Whoever is responsible for this most practical layout is my HERO & I can't wait for their next one!

I purchased this in 2018, along with two more by two other author, one of which was better, and one terrible. This one is a mixed blessing, so to speak.

There are two problems, the first being, as many other reviewers have pointed out, the frequent omissions of articles and lack of syntax, done purposely to confuse the reader. This is at best a lazy tactic. I expected better.

The second problem is the rigid brevity of each puzzle, apparently due to a compulsion to fit five on each page. Very rarely are there more than eighty characters in any single puzzle.

Three stars though, for the brilliant clue system which requires just one page to provide three clues for each of 368 puzzles. I’ve not seen this before and wish all cryptogram books would follow suit.
