I purchased the older edition at great cost, and, out of spite that the publisher had not only reprinted but revised such a book that I acquired based on assumed rarity, did not purchase this edition at first.

If you do not own the previous edition, then there can be no question you should acquire this book; and the same holds true if you have it. This book and the author have an immense reputation, and I choose not to dwell on it, and comment only on this edition.

There are additional photographs; in addition, the photos included in the earlier editions have been enhanced. There is much more contrast and resolution; they have been digitalized whereas the previous were converted by analog dot "screens" since photostatic contrast was TOO great, although some shots lose much of the atmosphere of the older ones and are of less artistic value. There is no question the informational value has been enhanced. I also cannot overemphasize the interest of the previously unpublished images.

I love ships, especially old ones. Years ago I did hours of research at the University Of Utah library, and was delighted when I discovered R.A. Burt's 'British Battlships: 1889-1904'. There was information there that I had never seen anywhere before, indeed had never dreamed existed - minute detail about armor location and design, things that no one else ever mentioned. I saw that they had Burt's World War One battleship book, but it was in storage an since I was neither student, faculty or staff I wasn't allowed access to it. It would cost more than I could affod to buy a copy, so for many years I just lived without it.

The they reprinted it. With additions. For a great price. I bought it as soon as I saw it on Amazon. I haven't regretted it yet. The book is everything I hoped it would be, with attention to detail equalling that of his first book. Money well spent, and I love the book.

A Must Own For Battleship Enthusiasts

This is my first book by R.A. Burt. A revised and reprinted edition by the Naval Institute Press. This hardback book is far superior to any other books I currently own about battleships. The closest comparable I own is "Conway's Battleships: Revised Edition." Burt's book includes through information about every British dreadnought of the time period. There are wonderful large and detailed pictures and line drawings. Included are also is information on the rare war purchases like the HMS Erin & Agincourt in addition to Jackie's little battle-cruisers.

My only complaint for the book is the large line drawings of ships were have been better served with a foldouts. Other then that, the book is a fantastic collection of information. Now I only hope someone writes a similar book about German dreadnoughts.

Expensive and Over-rated

As a naval officer who spent a several years underway on a mere DDG, I find it hard to understand the enthusiasm for this book. It offers a complete, and very limited, overview from HMS Dreadnought to the large light cruiser Furious. There are some basic technical facts for each class of ship, but little analysis of tactics, deployments, armament effectiveness, battle damage, etc. The operational history of each ship is brief and limited to lines listed by calendar dates. The sections on armor rely exclusively on a few dense paragraphs of text when simple line drawings would be far more accessible and clear. The many photos are the book's strong point, but often are too small to show much useful detail. More drawings of internal deck layouts would be nice. I am not sorry I read it, just sorry I paid so much for so little compared to other books on battleships published over the years.

An excellent read, packed with both outline technical information on each class and ship within the class, including changes and their fates. Where those fates were other than simply the breakers yard, these are covered in more detailed.
As usual, the book is full of Mr Burt's excellent line drawings (some in colour to show the more unusual early attempts at camouflage) plus a superb collection of photos. It should be born in mind that photos from this era are not so easy to find, many having been lost due to businesses closing, wartime bombing of offices etc, so to find such excellent illustrations is a real bonus for both the enthusiast and especially the model maker.

I've only just received this book so have not yet had an opportunity to go into detail. However from just a quick skim I can tell you that if you are looking for a comprehensive illustrated book of RN battleships from this era- this is for you. The warships of the First world War suffer from an absence of good quality photographs for enthusiasts and ship modellers alike. This book redresses this in spades- the number and quality of photographs is a joy. There are only a couple of photographs in this book that I've seen elsewhere (including the web). For the pictures alone its worth the money. In addition RA Burt has included some fascinating line drawings and colour plates showing ship camoflage- apparently based on animal markings- ever seen a battlecruiser painted like a leopard? Well done RA Burt and well done Seaforth!

This volume is by far the best on this subject that I have so far seen. The great warships which once lay so grandly in Portsmouth say, for the Navy Week of pre War days sadly are no more. However in this book British Battleships of World War One it is possible with the most excellent photographs sometimes beautifully enlarged to cover a complete spread. almost to see them again for real.
I remember before the War going to Navy Week and taking afternoon tea with my parents on the Quarter Deck of H.M,S. Iron Duke. To this day I can still see in my mind her wonderful wooden decking and the white canvas awning as well as her huge guns in their after turret....and here in this book it is possible to see her again together with every battleship of that era and to learn of every relevant detail right down to the amount and kind of ship's boats they carried and the history of each from launch to inevitable demise. A truly wonderful book.

It has been long on the market open to any way of torpedoing, smothering with critics, etc. It`s still flaoting as the Queen untouched, sovereignly showing it`s unerring light to the schoolar of this subject. I can't imagine a more satisfiing single volume on the subject. Doing naval research now for over 40 years, I`ve got 3 different prints of it. I wanted to get rid of two of them some time or another. They stick to me like my shadow, and I feel very comfortable with them. I'd never part with one of them.
