Good Try at an Explanation of Racism

As a white woman who has read a number of books about race in America, there is nothing new in this book; but it is a brief, readable summary that tries to give us an appreciation of what it is like to be not white in America. Race and racial bias has permeated America since the "discovery" of America by Columbus. And it continues on ebbing and flowing, sometimes going underground, with the political climate. Racism is now in ascendance unfortunately.

If you are aware of it, it is around you all the time. Some examples: The Social Security office that is crowded and poorly staffed with untrained people in minority to areas and the quiet, peaceful overstaffed Social Security office with helpful, knowledgeable people in white areas. The acquaintance who went on a rant about immigrants as a lawn service truck pulled out into traffic forcing her to slow down. The casual assumption that when something is missing in a rental that is is the (non-white) cleaning staff at fault. And those are trivial compared to the pervasive assumptions about young black people compared with the protectionism provided to young white males no matter how awful the conduct.

It is clear in these reviews as well as in comments to any article about racism in America, especially if the article is by a minority trying to explain their experiences to white America, how deep much of white America is in denial about both our history as well as our present reality.

Really good book - wish everyone would read it with an open mind.

This is what Americans (esp white Americans) need to read. This is a good beginner read for someone new to concepts about race, history of race, memory politics, identity politics, and social policies... in today's social settings, we need more white Americans with solidarity and allyship who are willing to put down their born privileges and see others' suffering as their own and actively help to create new and better future for all Americans.

Excellent. This is an honest and truthful account of racism and white supremacy in public policy throughout the 20th century that conspired to keep Blacks 'in their place', as the lowest class in society. The factors are still at work twisting and stunting the lives. Mr. Wise speaks the truth and it is so refreshing and hopeful that a white man tells this honest truth to other white people, who should (and in some cases do) know the truth. Keep on writing Mr. Wise, we need more people like you.
