informative book of what it covers
This is my first book about plants I've ever bought. I bought it for a camping/hiking field guide. The plants this book does cover offers a lot of information including a brief description, history of the plant, When in the year it blooms, Where it is most likely to grow, Edibility, Medicinal uses, and sometimes includes a look-alike plant and their differences. Also has a section for Titled Toxic Plants and Advanced Medicines, which will cover toxic plants and gives warnings in bold type. Also included in this book is a glossery which will explain the plant and medical terms found in this book, which was helpful because this is my first experience with a plant book. Overall I enjoy this book, but guess what I was looking for was something a little more complete, including mushrooms, trees. A one book for my backpack. I am happy with this book, it is a great first step to knowing more about the resources of nature, but it's not a comlete book about all plants, trees and fungi...

This book is really well done. It gives really good pictures and descriptions to help identify edible plants. Most other books I have seen do not give good enough of descriptions to be willing to bet my health on the plant being edible. In most cases the pictures in this book are high enough quality to settle the issue. If there are similar appearing poisonous plants it does a good job describing them.

Unfortunately I did not see several of my favorite plants in Southern California. The wild radishes, yellow sorrel, and purslane which are so common here are absent from the book. Also absent is one of the more common plants for people to poison themselves on, oleander. Still, the book can't list all plants and most of the choices of what to include seem fairly well thought out.

I am truly amazed at the information in this book. All of the species covered have very detailed full color photographs showing you leaf structure and poisonous look a likes. This has got to be the best guide to edible and medicinal plants I have ever read.

I purchased another book on here called "Northwest Foraging" by Doug Benoliel and although the book was very knowledgeable, the pictures in it were illustrated.

Other Thoughts: Wish it were small enough to keep in my back pocket, but still worth the buy.

very clear pictures with good descriptions. reasonably small size so that you can take it into the field. all the information you would want to identify a plant in the field.

i only wish that they had a smal list in it that had the names of the all the plants you would encounter in a particular area compiled as a list. it would have been helpful for a novice like me when i am walking thru an open field for example, so that i would know whch plants to be keeping an eye out for.

I love the fact that there are pictures with each plant so you can really study what the plant looks like. They give you the details of what the plant taste like and ideas in how to eat it if you wanted to. I already started recognizing plants which is helpful when walking the dog so I can make sure he doesn't eat certain plants. I still have to try some for medicine and I'm excited about trying some new plants that other parts of the world use in everyday cuisines.

What I like most is the clear pictures of plants. When you are foraging you need to be certain about what you have collected. Learning new plants too. So many plants have "look a likes".

Another of my must have books. When surviving by living off the wilderness you need to know what you can and cannot eat. Most aboriginal peoples ate what they could harvest, and actually ate much less meat than we do today. This book helps you identify the edibles that we walk over every day because we are blind to them. Learn to fend for yourself, and when there is no salad at the store you can still have a nice salad from wild sources. High nutrients and low fat is the solution to starving in the wild. Get this book and stay alive.

This is a great book that describes plants local to the area. Easy to use, each plant has a page of two, good photos, and description. I especially like the section on medicinal uses and how the plant was used by Native American tribes and traditional folkloric medicine.

This book is exactly what I was looking for. It has very clear well taken photographs (not sketches). Clear descriptions of each and every herb. Slightly large for a "field guide" but thats ok as this isnt what that is. Its a perfect reference book. I was not aware of just how many local plants are actually used!! I pull some of these out of my garden or lawn regularly and now I know that I can pull them and then use them. I would and have recommended it to many people.
