True the book has drawing not photos but they are very accurate and when my grandmother wrote it it was considered cutting edge

The book is just the right size to keep in my backpack. I wish the plant descriptions included color photos or at least color illustartions. However, the illustrations are quite detailed and the descriptions are very helpful. I'm happy with the book, all in all, and the shipping was very fast.

Perhaps I am bias, Even though the Pictures are some of the finest drawn illustrations of Plants i have ever seen.

This small book contains 105 species and weighs 3.6 ounces on my scale and is 8.5"x5.5"-important for backpackers. I bought it because of its low price, light weight for backpacking, and as a second source to my "Edible and Medicinal Plants of the West" by Tilford which is excellent. Unlike the Tilford guide, the plants in this book are categorized according to trees, shrubs, vines, herbs, and water plants as all plant guides should be for easier look up. The sketches are only average which is a big problem with an identification book. Photographs are far superior to even the best drawings, but photographic paper is much heavier. The descriptions and common uses of the plants are also sketchy, but like the author says the book contains only the most important and common edible plants of the West. So I would not recommend the book for the beginner and only maybe for the more experienced forager for reminders on plant uses while out hiking because of the book's light weight.

Its hard for a book to be a identification plant guide without color photos. otherwise i wouldve given this item 5 stars. Would be a a good book for people who already know the plants and want to know more about them soo definetly not for begginers. overall its a in between book for me not too bad not too great i mean i only paid a dollar for it. so like a i said before,if your a begginner dont get this book first.
