Of the 4,000 species listed in this book, only 147 species have a drawing to go with them. Some of those species are already very identifiable and didn’t need a drawing, most know what a pine cone, blackberries and cannabis look like. The 147 that do have a drawing, have a simple ink drawing with no color and I’d think a person would have to be an expert to begin with to match any actual living plant to any one of these drawings. I was hoping to learn which plants were edible and identify them but I won’t be able to get that from this book. Also there are no physical descriptions of the species.

Even though I would have done a few things differently (like having a more detailed "Table of Contents", so the reader can know how the families, genus', species, subspecies, etc. are more easily broken down - throughout the almost 600 pages of the book)...nonetheless: THIS BOOK STANDS ALONE! This is not a book that will help (the casual) "weekender" of edible plants, be able to go out into the woods and bring in a treasure of edible plants; no, that's not the value of this book (one needs a field guide for that, complete with color pictures...and the field guide would do a better job). The value here and why it stands alone, is because of the absolutely incredible level of research and knowledge that's within your hands, allowing you to take (any) other book on plants (whether edible or not)...and then determine if the plant(s) in the other book(s) are in fact edible, and what parts. There's more, but to me, this is the value; and THIS value is unique and unmatched. Jim from WI.

Very detailed, explains what the plant looks like and how to use it, however, very few pictures. Will have to buy another book with pictures. I knew that when I bought it tho. Wish they would put pictures in it, would be absolutely perfect.

This plant book has a wealth of basic information.Yet,it could be more extensive and colorful. The book was first published back in the mid 1970s.There is a lot of ethnic historical information about each plant. But,not so much scientific information.Luckily,i am a student of some Latin studies and enjoyed reading the root words for each plant. If you have read other plant books in tandem with this one,it would help you out greatly. As a single book on plants,it's lacking on profound research data for each one.I found the book to be impractical as far as preparing a wild edible plant for medical or comsumptive use. There are throughly good examples of warnings on the dangers of improper uses of the edible plants.
If prepared correctly, then the plant can be a boon to the body.If carried out incorrectly, the cure can be as deadly as your aliment.I would recommend reading ,'Grieve's Herbal Encyclopedia A-Z',first.And use this book,as a back-up reference. This book suffers from trying to cover too much information in one volume. And straying into other ethnic areas, outside of the North America focus.Alma Hutchins' book on 'Plants of the Native Americans' ran into the same problem.Couplan's plant book is still worthy of inspection by anyone interested in edible native plant studies.

I'm in New Zealand, not north America, but for me this is the single most reliable and comprehensive guide to edible plants that happen to be available from the nursery and seed trade that are not usually marketed as edible, a huge number of species. It is also good for edible weeds growing here, America is a very diverse continent, chances are it will have stuff suited to you wherever you are in the world. I like it because it is level headed, it's not unusual to find beautifully written books on this subject that are rather seductive and romantic about wild or obscure edibles, exaggerating their benefits, presumably because they feel connecting with nature is a good cause (which it is) so a little propaganda doesn't hurt. I always know this book will be realistic & sober, "the last word" often because the author has sampled the plants himself. The only annoying thing is he doesn't give specific references for each bit of info ,so you can't check up on his sources, he does list all the sources at the end but you can't tell what was the source of what. For most people this won't be an issue I expect.

One of my top three favorite books on edible plants. I was a park ranger for about 27 years, and a hardcore backpacker and hiker. I collect and use edible plants all the time, and this book, along with the Peterson Guide to Edible Plants and Stalking The Wild Asparagus, in my opinion are the three best books out there. You need to be able to trust the information you are reading, because consuming wild edibles can make you very ill, or in some cases kill you. Some food need to be prepared correctly. This book has so much great information and I have not seen anything in it yet that seems questionable or suspicious regarding the ways to prepare or consume plants that are mentioned. I have relied this book now, tried their suggestions and will continue to do so for a long time.

I would have liked this book for myself but I had bought it for an outdoosman who wants to live more from the outdoors. He tells me that he has tried several things. I may buy it yet for myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pour naturaliste
Reviewed in France on November 3, 2012
