About the Author

Jean Hunnisett has a lifetime's experience of professional costume making, including work for the Old Vic, Sadlers Wells, Royal Opera and Ballet, Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, the English National Opera, Washington Ballet, Houston Opera, Zurich Ballet, Australian Ballet and as Principle Cutter for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She has worked for BBC Television on over fifty shows: 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII', 'Elizabeth R', 'Emma', 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Ivanhoe', 'Vanity Fare', 'Dr. Who', nine productions of the BBC Shakespeare Series, nine of the BBC Operas, etc. Jean also worked for commercial television companies, on shows such as: 'Edward the VII', 'Ghosts', 'Pygmalion' for Annette Crosby, and Twiggy among others. Her film credits include: 'The Slipper and the Rose', 'Joseph Andrews', 'The Corn is Green', 'For Your Eyes Only' and many more. For productions in London's West End theatre, she has made costume for such artists as Joan Collins, Dame Wendy Hiller, Joan Plowright and Dorothy Tutin. It would take pages to list the theatre, ballet and opera productions she has worked on. Another side of her work was to make parts of costumes for museums such as the Museum of London and Kensington Palace, enabling them to show incomplete treasures. Jean also made costumes for Madam Tussaud's at Warwick Castle and at Windsor Station. She inaugurated and taught period costume cutting at the London College of Fashion and extensively lectured at home and abroad. Her career has put her side by side with a host of famous personalities. Producers, directors, designers, stars of stage and screen, teachers and student all agree that Jean Hunnisett is the Preeminent Lady of Costume Construction.

My four-star is not a five star because of things in the book not my experience with the seller I want to clarify first see details below .

Seller got the book out to me very quickly it arrives before it was supposed to it was in perfect condition. I would absolutely buy from this seller again .

The reason I gave it four stars is because my interest is specifically 1700s and this spends a couple centuries which a lot of books due. This one has a lot of wonderful information in it some great patterns that you can scale up.

Only complained really is that it does cover three or four centuries and I am looking for books that are specific to the 18th century and I wish that there were more books that specialize in A narrowed range for time periodes.

It's a great resource to have to supplement your
Collection for any person interested in clothing from those time periods however this is not my main go to book only because it is so broad.

My favorite resource is Costume Close-ups .

This is my 2nd Hunniset that I've gotten and I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to be in theatrical costuming! It is amazing! I've used it extensively for 2 projects, one 1780s Polonaise Dress and a 1680s Dress for a show! What I love is that it gives you step by step instructions on draping. You don't really need to use the patterns, but it's very helpful. For my 18th century dress, I draped the whole thing, following her detailed instructions. I also used a lot of her construction techniques! This in conjunction with my teacher, Mela Hoyt-Heyden, who actually worked with Jean, resulted in one of my most elaborate and beautiful costumes I ever made for "The compleat Female Stage Beauty" We used the pattern in the book as a base, and went from there, followed her construction techniques, and even learned to cartridge pleat myself following her clear instructions! She even has plenty of advice on working in the industry. This book is definitely worth it!

How to make underclothing, very clear drawings. Shows Tudor sleeve construction also farthingales and all the tricky Elizabethan sleeve bits.I've used the patterns for making large porcelain French lady dolls clothing.
