Where should I start the tale of my life a life devoted to Chasing the Horizon? Im an individual almost entirely satiated by mere physical movement, if it is upon the sea. How did this happen?
Adventure? Oh, yes. Plenty. Ive been through eight tropical hurricanes aboard various sailing craft within the last forty years. I survived them all, though twice the boats didnt. Pity. Its so difficult to dog-paddle around in the water in the midst of a hurricane as your vessel founders and maintain any sort of personal dignity.
Ive been shot at, arrested, kidnapped, beat up, glorified, and spat upon. Ive been held up to public ridicule; and Ive even lectured at the better Universities. Ive attended a total of about five years of school (too many!), and have been involved in some misguided endeavors which I hope will never see the light of day.
Yes, I believe Ive led a rather adventurous life. Ive loved enough women to have forgotten many of their names. Ive lived with mud-caked Third World friends Ive had to nonchalantly rub with a damp wash cloth to determine skin color (curiosity, not prejudice). I once overheard a dozen crewmen calmly discussing knocking me overboard in the middle of the night because they suspected Id secretly hidden some fish guts in my cabin instead of properly sharing them (we were hungry; Id caught a large dolphin, quickly cleaned it, and then stupidly thrown its best parts overboard).
Maybe I should begin my tale by telling you, dear reader, about the people; the barnacle-encrusted actors which will stroll across my sandy, water-colored stage.
The title of this book could just as easily be Seadogs, Clowns and Gypsies. Or Wonderful Waterfront Wackos. Or Lush Tropical Vegetables.
Certainly, the characters are at the very core of any tale worth telling.
Or perhaps I should begin my tale in the present tense, though there is nothing very tense about my present.
Lets try.
Im sitting at the nav table of a small black fiberglass sloop anchored by a small hot island off the coast of Venezuela. The boat is named Wild Card and she is a 38 S&S designed, Hughes built racer/cruiser. St. John, USVI is her hailing port.
We are hiding out from hurricane season here at Latitude 11 North, Longitude 64 West. Pampatar, Isla Margarita an ideal place to play Jimmy Buffets Wasted Away Again in Margaritaville song at full volume on the cockpit speakers. I do; often.
Living (and life) is cheap here. Most of the people are friendly. Many of the boat boys, beggars and thieves know me. They know Im broke; hell, I cage drinks from them when possible. They steal mostly from wealthy Americans wearing too much tasteless jewelry. Yes, even the Boat Boys of Beanerville have certain professional criteria.
A frosty cold beer (Polar) ashore on the beach here is 22 cents, and I feel that I am losing money if Im not drunk.
I have no shirt on as I write these airless words, and sweat rolls down my nut-brown body. It pools in the folds of my belly. My armpits reek. The sun is fat and boiling and merciless this far south. Not a breath of wind is upon the sea, and a glassy, sickening swell is rolling in from the east.
Oh well. Paradise is no more perfect than anywhere else, and thats a difficult lesson to learn.
All my life I have been both blessed and bedeviled by a curious sort of internal third eye a perpetual camera within my twitching brain. Click! Any experience which has touched my heart, stirred my dick, or twisted up my guts Ive captured forever. My mind is filled with a million pulsating images pure slices of juicy life.
After all, memories are compact, waterproof, and easily stowed; the perfect collectable for the seafaring man.
I am here now at this miserable nav table scribbling these stiflingly clumsy words because all my life there has been only two things which interest me, two things which motivate me.
Sailing and The Stories.
Ive spent nearly all my time engaged in both. By this measure, I am a successful man. By any other, Im an abject failure perhaps to the point of pity.
Just cause everybody says that you are wrong doesnt mean that you are right but it usually is a good indication that you are.. my father often advised me.
Good advise.

About the author

Cap'n Fatty Goodlander has lived aboard various sailing vessels for 54 of his 62 years. He has written numerous books--including his autobiographical comedy "Chasing the Horizon." At various times, Fatty has been a professional actor, a radio broadcaster, and a newspaper writer. He also had a series of summer travel spots for National Public Radio which are available at NPR.org, and which he has humorously recounted in "NPR & Me."
He and his wife, Carolyn, are currently cruising Southeast Asia aboard their 43-foot ketch "Ganesh." They completed their second circumnavigation in 2011...and started on their third trip around in 2013. They expect to complete circ #3 in a decade or two.
Cap'n Fatty is a featured columnist in All At Sea and an Editor-at-Large of Cruising World magazine.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2012I'm a regular reader of Cap'n Fatty's CW column and already an admirer, but this book is one of his most personal efforts. It's an autobiography that takes you to the heart of his gypsy life, with all the joys and heartbreak equally expressed. Very moving, and inspiring!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2007For all the Captain Fatty fans out there, this is a must read. Great background on what makes him such a great character, a steadfast sailor and a hilarious writer. It's laugh-out-loud funny. And is highly recommended for every occasion except night-time reading while you wife is trying to sleep.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2008I bought this book after reading the other reviews, and because I enjoy Fatty's column in Cruising World magazine so much. What a disappointment. Crude, crass, misguided, I don't know where to start. I threw it out after reading a few chapters and scanning the rest to see that it didn't improve. Well, everyone is entitled to his own opinion, read it for yourself if you like.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2014I love irreverent people, crazy adventures, and people who live life just the way they are. Will definitely try his other books
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2016No one understands or can relate sailing better
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2010When you think of the cruising lifestyle, when you imagine the craziness of it all, when it's margarita time ...
Cap'n Fatty is a real guy, but he's also an icon and a local hero on St. John, where I used to live. His writing is irreverent and scattered, perfect for the kind of stories he tells. This book spends quite a bit of time on his childhood and his father, who obviously had a huge impact on his own character development. He divides the book up by which boat he was living or working on at the time.
I'd love to meet his daughter - I bet she's an interesting girl too.
I've heard there's a newer version with pictures and such - I have the old somewhat low budget version. When you read it, you can imagine him holed up for hurricane season in South America, trying to keep the beer cold and pounding out a lifetime of adventure on some beat up typewriter. This guy lived a big life. Both exemplary and cautionary, he's a model for those of us who dream of doing the same.
Highly recommended for armchair sailors, beach bums, counterculture creatives, anarchists, cruising sailors and their families, etc.
A cherished volume in my library, with lots of scribbles and underlines at my favorite parts.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2009My problem with Cap'n Fattys Books is I either read them too fast or his books are about 1000 pages too short. Chasing the horizon was interesting, funny and a down to earth telling of the adventures of the Goodlanders.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2003Sea adventures do not get any funnier then this.
I almost got thrown off the boat while cruising the Isle de saints because I laughed so hard at night. Fatty is indeed a real guy and his wife is a saint. It is one of those books you can pass around and reread 10 times. For 10+ bucks you can't go wrong heck it is cheaper then a fuel filter.
