- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2008Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIf the incredible colors and textures of mokume gane have captivated your imagination, you must have this book. Opening with a brief history of the craft's Japanese origins, Midgett moves quickly on to the how-to of the craft. This starts with a summary of the metals common in jewelry making and the metallurgy involved. Several processes exist for bonding the layers, and Midgett explains the differences in clear, understandable terms. That takes up about the first third of the book.
The next third walks the reader through the process in extraordinary detail. It includes everything from cleaning the metal sheets to be layered, firing them, and forming the layered stack (or billet) into sheets and rods. The firing section covers making your own kiln, plus a few articles by guest authors on alternative firing techniques. Then a few pages instruct in conjuring the metal's patterns from the prepared blanks. Although some techniques demand industrial equipment, the studio artist gets plenty to work with, too.
The last third of the book presents an inspiring gallery of masterworks, plus a few do-it-yourself projects for someone who already has strong basic jewelry-making skills. It's not quite fair to say that the gallery appears just at the end of the book, though, because every section opens with a few examples, and others appear scattered throughout. On the whole, I find this book a thorough and valuable resource for crafters and aficionados of beautiful metalwork.

From the seller, but the book did not contain the info I needed, so I need to return it. I’m sorry, I don’t often do this, but the book is expensive and excellent, but will not work for me in a classroom setting.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2001Format: HardcoverThis book is the 2nd book by the author on the subject (the 1st one is out of print.) It's widely recognized as the ultimate source of information on how to make mokume gane.
Mokume gane is a traditional Japanese metalsmithing technique by which sheets of different metals - generally copper, silver, gold, and alloys of those - are stacked and welded together. This results in a piece of metal that displays a woodgrain-like pattern that shows the different metals' colors.
This book focuses on the different techniques to make mokume gane. It addresses the 2 usual methods, liquid and solid bonding, and also deals with more complex and high tech methods. One of the best feature is an entire chapter on a great low cost method. Not only does it address the methods to make the raw billets, it also talks about each technique that can be used to reveal the internal pattern.
The book is maybe 50% to 75% written by Midgett himself, but he has not hesitated in leaving others talk about different techniques. This results in a text that addresses each area with great confidence.
The book is enriched with many photographies, both step by step illustrations of techniques as well as examples of art works, many of them trully stuning. Again, Mr. Midgett gave a lot of rooms for other contributing artists to display their work.
The last chapter is a series of projects, increasing in difficulty, profusely illustrated with clear pictures.
All and all, one of the best "how to" book I've ever purchased. Complete, clear, and yet not boring at all. Highly recommended!
