AN EDUCATION IN REBELLION: THE BIOGRAPHY Paperback – February 25, 2015

3.9 out of 5 stars 28 ratings

Time Magazine quipped at the start of the Millennium in their gossip section that the Backstreet Boys might be transforming into the Millennium's new Motley Crue now that "Nikki Sixx has mellowed out..." Following an almost 3-decade education in rebellion as Hard Rock's mad musical scientist- highlighted by a now-infamous (and temporarily lethal) heroin overdose; relationships with some of Hollywood's most luscious leading ladies, including Vanity, Playboy Playmate Brandi Brandt, Baywatch star Donna D'Errico, and L.A. Ink star Kat Von D; and an almost 30-year, multi-platinum run (selling over 80,000,000 records worldwide) as the creative center of hard rock's most decadent and notorious rock band, Motley Crue, Nikki Sixx's legacy among rock and metal fans worldwide is secure. Chronicled via Sixx's own diary entries, as well as through exclusive interviews with many of those closest to Sixx, including Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former live-in girlfriend (and multi-platinum rock artist) Lita Ford, legendary hard rock producers Bob Rock, Tom Werman, and Scott Humphrey, co-founding member of London Lizzie Grey, legendary rock photographer Neil Zlozower, Sixx A.M. band member and Sixx songwriting/producing partner James Michael, recovery specialist to the stars Bob Timmons (who aided Sixx through his substance abuse recovery), 58 collaborator Dave Darling, former Motley Crue/Brides of Destruction band mate John Corabi, late Quiet Riot frontman Kevin Dubrow (recalling Sixx's 1980 pre-Crue audition for Quiet Riot), among many others. Updated from its original 2003 publishing through the summer of 2009, and including a free bonus sampler featuring unsigned/up and coming Millennium rock/metal bands influenced by Sixx's songwriting, 'An Education in Rebellion: The Biography of Nikki Sixx', promises to paint for its readers both a vividly intimate and wildly colorful portrait of the life and times of one of hard rock's most important and influential icons!! "Nikki Sixx is the lifeblood of Motley Crue." - Bob Rock "Nikki Sixx is a rock and roll icon." - Paul Gargano, former Editor in Chief, Metal Edge Magazine "I think Nikki Sixx will be remembered as having one of the great, loud, tortured, decadent pens of any songwriter of the heavy metal era." - Lonn Friend, Former Editor, R.I.P "Nikki Sixx is one of the examples of why I continue to do my work, and that's probably the highest compliment I know to pay Nikki Sixx."- Bob Timmons,Recovery Specialist

I can't understand why there are so many negative reviews of this book being posted. Jake Brown is one of rock's BEST biographers. He's written excellent books on Rick Rubin, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice in Chains and Heart, among others.

Jake actually takes the time to discuss the creative process behind Motley Crue, and gives equal weight to the music AND the personal trials and tribulations Nikki Sixx went through on his rise to the top. He actually talks about the music, not just the gossip and BS that we've heard about a million times before in other Motley Crue books, TV shows, etc.

Sometimes the BEST biographies are the ones that are unauthorized, becuase you get an unfiltered view into the artist or performer. This is a perfect example. I enjoyed this book a LOT more than "the Dirt".

I hope this author continues to write rock biographies such as this.

Anyone who disagrees must be on Nikki Sixx or Motley Crue's payroll :)

Another great look into the life of a rock legend and a wonderful read. I have been a fan of Motley Crue since the 80's and thought I had a pretty good knowledge of anything Crue but this book proved me wrong. I enjoyed it very much!!!

I should have wiped my but with the twenty dollars this terribly written excuse for a book cost. I have never read anything before that had as many misspelled words before. The author could not even spell the peoples names correctly that he was quoting. I would not tell anyone to read this book nor can i believe that a publishing company put there name on this without proofreading first.

Its about time someone wrote a book on hard rock's most notorious and enduring rebel- Nikki Sixx! From front to back, this book gives a concise and vivid inside look into Nikki Sixx's life, behind the scenes in the studio, in his personal life, and in his own mind through revealing diary entries. The stand out interviews in this book are with Lita Ford, Tom Werman and Bob Timmons, all of whom provide never-before revealed details into the mind of hard rock's mad scientist, in terms of his creative approach to writing and recording, his pursuit in the early days of Motley Crue of the brass ring, and his hard fought battle to recover from a life-threatening heroine addiction. Any die-hard Motley Crue fan or hard rock novice should own a copy of this book.

Ok I bought this book over a year ago from Swagrox I think I paid maybe like twenty bucks for it.. I have been a huge Nikki Sixx fan since Too Fast For Love came out.. and i had to buy it. Its NOT a very good book.. most the information in there is common knowledge and after reading The Dirt you know more about him than what you may learn from this book. The author did a HORRID job.. theres spelling errors and other huge mistakes in there.. I'm pretty sure a trained monkey could have done a better job. Even the font that they printed it in is lame... looks like some teenager with poor eyesight typed it.. in the dark with one arm?? I can't believe these people are asking that much for this book.. its NOT worth it..trust me

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard going.

I’ve read numerous Motley Crue/Nikki Sixx books from the Heroin Diaries 10th Anniversary edition (the one to have!) through to The Dirt and most things in between. This is one though is hard going and a not a great read to be honest. All the other books I’ve read have had me wanting to read them whenever I could and to revel in them, but this one is a bit boring. I’ll read it, but can’t say I’m enjoying it. Oh and there are so many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that for the price I had to pay for it (£30) shouldn’t be there.
