I had to read this book after reading the first book in the series. I had so many questions about Ruby. Thankfully, this book answered them all. Each book in this series is a stand alone, but subsequent books are about secondary characters and, of course, we don't know everything there is to know about them. Another good thing about a series like this, we get glimpses into the lives of the stars of the previous books. I'm happy to report that Brock and Vi are doing splendidly.
Ruby found an old journal of her mother's and it opened her eyes, explaining many things about her mother and her attitude toward Ruby. Her mother had been unfaithful to her husband and Ruby was the result of the affair. The loving man, who had raised her until he died when Ruby was still a young girl, was not her father. Her mother had fallen deeply in love with the unknown man but he wanted nothing to do with her or his daughter. No wonder her mother could barely stand the sight of her! Ruby searched and searched but the man was never named. Ruby was determined to find him. And Harold was determined to protect Ruby, even as she protested.
This book was a fun read. Ruby was certainly a determined sleuth, but not very experirnced. And though she resented Harold following her around, she was thankful he was there on many an occasion. I enjoyed the adventures as Ruby searched for her father. I enjoyed the love story that developed. Hmmmm.....Now there is a new character that I am wondering about. I enjoyed this book and I think you will, too.
