This one starts with Kelly Turnbull, Ted Hiroshi and Dave McCluskey. All three are operators and very, very capable. The three are in Novobirsk, Russia on the hunt for a Professor Ivan Maksimov. They know where he is and will have to pay the Russians who control the area so they can get in without problems. Vasily is their contact and his cousin Demitri is already at the site and has been.
Its a mission that goes wrong after they get to the building where the Professor is supposed to be. The metal door they will enter has a bar across the outside. This is to keep something in. Once inside they clear the building area by area and are attacked by what McCluskey calls a Zombie. The only way to kill it is to shoot in the head which Kelly does but not before the thing scratched Hiroshi's face. Now they need to get out and they do. There are no living people in the building. They make it to the airport and the G650D lands and they board.
Kelly knows they have been infected with whatever the things had. He tells the pilot and co-pilot to stay in the cockpit no matter what. He and the other are sicker than dogs but they make it home. Kelly is the only survivor and he appears to be immune.
Once home Kelly settles back into his normal routine. He had spent months in the hospital recovering from what ever the things had given him. He sure hates to call them Zombies but that's exactly what they were. Kelly is in the outside patio with Jeff his dog. He's speaking with Lorna the waitress when he notices two black SUV's pull up on the street outside the diner. Clay Deeds steps out and Kelly knows he has another mission for him. A mission he doesn't want.
Deeds tells Kelly the virus that killed Hiroshi and McCluskey and damned near killed him is still out there. Deeds calls the virus Marburg X. He tells Kelly the People's Republic is the target. He wants Kelly to go with him to a meeting in Mexico City. Its a meeting Kelly would rather skip but know he can't.
On arrival in Mexico City Kelly meets the two men from the PR that they are there to meet. One of them is Martin Rios-Parkinson. The Director of the Peoples Bureau of Investigation. A man Kelly hates with a passion. A man he'd like to shoot right now. But he can't. Rios-Parkinson is well aware of why Deeds and he are meeting. If he wants to save the Peoples Republic then he needs to get with the program and sponsor Kelly in the PR.
Of course treachery from those from the PR is something that Kelly expects. A shooter which is one of Rios-Parkinson's men shoots Deeds. Kelly shoot the shooter who is Rollins an aid to Rios-Parkinson. Kelly gets Rios-Parkinson out and he knows Deeds will be cared for. Once out they head for the airport. Rios-Parkinson is a coward and the fight to get out of the building showed Kelly how much of a coward he is.
Once at the airport they board a jet from the Peoples Republic. A jet assigned to Rios-Parkinson. It will deliver he and Kelly to the Peoples Republic. A Peoples Republic that is a place Kelly never wanted to go to again. The country is half of the US and is called the Blue. The Western half of the US is the Red. A stable, successful country full of working people. The Blue is bull of freeloaders who are happy to collect their welfare checks each month and literally do nothing. The People Republic is a failing venture but those in power don't seem to realize it.
So begins one damned fine read. I laughed my way through it. I'm a Red and proud of it.
This one has Kelly, Kristina his PR partner, an Arab named Hamid who is running the walking dead scenario, Rios-Parkinson who is power hungry, Harrington the PR vice President who sees himself as the President, Germany that had loaded itself down with members of the death cult, a death cult that has taken over the cities, the German people in the country who would like nothing better than to kill every Muslim they can, a Kelly who will be tracking down the Professor, a Professor who is using his skills to make Zombies, Zombies who will be attacking the People Republic, a Hamid who has a personal wish to kill Kelly, a Kelly who while in the Army had killed his sniveling brother, and Kelly Turnbull and Kristina his partner doing their best to stop the Professor, kill the bad guys, survive and stay alive.
Five big Stars. Great read.
Turnbull, who previously has smuggled people out of California and helped launch a border insurrection in southern Indiana, now sees the havoc the politically correct regime has caused in Washington, D.C. People are starving. Large parts of it are no-go areas ruled by warlords. There’s cannibalism. The government rations everything according to privilege levels, based on your level of victimhood - while saving the best, naturally, for themselves. The secret police are preoccupied with gender crimes. It’s a nightmare nation, infected by 21st century Maoism.
Turnbull hilariously tries to blend in in an environment with about 30 different gender pronouns as he races against the clock to find those importing Marburg virus into the People’s Republic. This is like Dirty Harry going to East Germany and pretending he works for the Stasi. His partner is a young federal agent, a highly indoctrinated woman with little tactical experience. Will his racist and patriarchal sensibilities lead her to feel unsafe? Will his hegemony encroach upon her? And will she get him killed? Meanwhile, the PR's bigs all plot against each other.
It’s a tall order, especially when they slip into Germany to go to the plot’s source. All Turnbull has going for him are his wits and his trusty .45. You don’t really want to screw around with a .38 or 9 mm if a bad guy needs wasting. He does get his hands on a vintage MAC-10, lovingly restored and customized by the last regular guy in the People's Republic, a former gunny who's the armorer for the People's Bureau of Investigation. (Where J. Edgar Hoover, long a left-wing bugaboo, has been restored to a place of honor because of his cross-dressing.)
The problem with self-publishing is the typos:
75 ‘ed up should be f’ed up
95 You saw too it should be You saw to it
107 browned bagged it should be brown bagged it
130 back in here room should be back in her room
183 didn’t peak German should be didn’t speak German
187 don’t have too should be don’t have to
192 The Swiss…was hunkering down again should be … were hunkering down again
199 it’ll wreak your day should be it’ll wreck your day
200 “It’s a Wonderful World” should be “What a Wonderful World”
204 down the wooded stairs should be down the wooden stairs
229 he aside phatically should be he said emphatically
233 Zergut should be Zehr Gut
254 Are those hat I think they are should be what I think they are
263 Quotation marks around Wonderful, and then before Now
266 causally should be casually
268 across is rib cage should be across his rib cage
274 elf-mage held captive should be elf-mage is held captive
278 into the cinder black should be into the cinder block
279 Hamid has a SIG should be Hamid had a SIG
Ha! He’s right about the “metaphor gap” on page 185
