In razor-sharp prose, Reflections from the Shadow of Los Angelescaptures the unique mix of orange groves and ocean beaches, Disneyland and drugs, freeways and false landmarks that defined the Golden State in the 1960s and ‘70s. Along the way to growing older and (somewhat) wiser, the author encounters the joys of first love and homemade explosives, the refuge of treetops and underground forts, and the small notes of happiness that music can bring. But there is hidden trauma in this paradise – family secrets that can’t stay buried forever.

By turns humorous and devastating, Byron’s journey leads him to the realization that truth and beauty are not things to be sought “out there,” but instead emerge from our own grappling with confusion, love, and heartache. Set within the backdrop of California culture that continues to fascinate so much of the world today,
Reflections is at once a very particular portrait of a time and place and a potent depiction of the universal quest for reconciliation and redemption.

I have known and appreciated this gifted writer and author for more than 40 years. Schneider is that rare combination of poet and descriptive writer. His particular gift is sparity- economy of words and intentional choice of same. This Memoir is filled with lovely alliteration, yet not for show or flowery. His narratives in this short Memoir are keen, insightful, funny, and heartbreakingly honest. If you enjoy good writing and an honest accounting of ‘70’s Southern California, this is a must read.

I found this memoir to be short, but deep and thoughtful. It was extremely well written with excellent word pictures on every page. I found myself understanding the symbolism and reflecting on it even weeks after I finished the book. Like others, my only disappointment was that the book was not longer. It left me wanting to know more and read more of those word pictures describing Southern California and suburban family life in the 1960s.

Parents and teens of today will find it interesting and helpful.

Having grown up at times in LA in the 60s-70s myself, this book brought back a lot of memories of that era and that most unique experience of being a kid in S. CA at that time.

Byron’s heartfelt and humorous account of his early days, brought to life by his masterful writing style and wit, made me feel that I was right there with him through the best and worst of family living (or survival) along with the adventures that stay with you for a lifetime.

Highly recommended!

My expectation was based on the description of this book. Having lived in southern california in the early 70's, I was looking forward to going down "memory lane" with the author with a more sensory experience. While Mr. Schneider faced some events in his life that were so tragic, I still kept thinking I'm going to turn the page and he'll start expanding more on the cultural greatness of that time period in his story.

Reflections from a shadow are bound to be muted, but this “very brief memoir” by Byron Schneider illuminates the subject in delicious detail. It is the childhood reminiscence of a “Baby Boomer” growing up in post-war Southern California, and Schneider infuses his recollections with irony and humility. The writing is superb, and as a fellow "boomer", I found this book entertaining and relatable.

You don't get a reflection from a shadow without illumination, and that is what Byron has done in this slim volume. Using gentle humor as a form of forgiveness, he shares relatable (and painful) vignettes of family dynamics and personal growth in a setting of 1960+ LA. This is not a 'lite' reflection, but a well executed literary chiaroscuro that I am so glad to have read. Highly recommend!

I read “Reflections from the Shadow of Los Angeles” while on a road trip, carefully doling out a chapter a day with plenty of travel time to reflect on the author’s experiences. His writing style adeptly created images in my mind of the events, as my emotions ran the gamut from sad to amused. I chuckled and downright belly laughed at times, and at the end I was left wishing for more.

This book is a series of beautifully written stories about growing up in SoCal at a time when housing developments were replacing orchards and the American family was rapidly changing.
Many wonderful and graphic sign-posts of the era are evoked in this memoir that is, in turns, poignant, funny and sad. A great read!
