Neil Young's Greendale Hardcover – June 15, 2010

4.4 out of 5 stars 53 ratings

"Greendale" is based on Neil Young's critically acclaimed 2003 album and 2004 film of the same name. Many have referred to the album as a "rock novel" which explores the effects of crime, media, consumerism and environmental issues on the Green family in the sheltered small Northern California town of Greendale.

Even for politically active teenage girls, Sun Green has always been different. There's been talk that the Green family women had great powers in concert with nature, but Sun herself never really wondered too much about it. Then, in the fall of 2003, as the nation gallops blindly into war, a Stranger appears in her hometown of Greendale, and everything starts going to hell. In an effort to overcome the pain the Stranger brings, Sun unearths the mystery of the Green family women, and in doing so, finds her own inherent power, not just to confront the Stranger, but to confront the mounting injustice of the world outside of Greendale as well.

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up Meet Sun Green. She's the latest in the familial line of Green Women environmentally conscious girls who are intent on saving the planet. The only problem is, all the other women in her family mysteriously disappeared when they reached her age. Fearful about what she may become and where she might end up, Sun seeks answers from her remaining extended family. When a mysterious stranger comes to town and threatens her brother and her new boyfriend, she may have to figure out a way to tap into her power and defeat him sooner rather than later. Set in 2003 during both the debate surrounding the Iraq conflict and the question of drilling for oil in Alaska, this tale manages to be both politically conscious and massively entertaining. The art is stunning. Sun is beautifully drawn and is just as radiant as her namesake. The unnamed mysterious stranger is depicted as gritty and sinister, just as a villain should be. This graphic novel is a great source for teenagers trying to understand the environment and how an individual can make a difference. Ryan Donovan, New York Public Library

For any fans of Neil Young (& Crazy Horse)'s 2003 album Greendale, or of Neil Young, or of really innaresting graphic novels, this long-waited release is highly recommended. Also check out Neil's fantastic DVD Greendale - a live action story mimed to the album.

I am not familiar with Neil Young's GREENDALE, the album, although I own a number of his albums from his days with Buffalo Springfield to CHROME DREAMS II. I approach this graphic novel on its own merits.

NEIL YOUNG'S GREENDALE offers a mystic, visionary experience of Sun Green in the first decade of this century, when the United States faces a number of challenges ranging from terrorist threats, environmental risks, and social schisms. Sun Green's understanding of family is shaken by the decline of her grandfather in his dimentia, her veteran cousin's inability to return to the way of life he enjoyed prior to his service, and the mysterious disappearances of women in her family. Sun comes to terms with these issues in this work.

Those familar with Joshua Dysart's writing for DC/Vertigo's UNKNOWN SOLDIER will find the same high consistency in his writing here. Cliff Chiang's art proves his great skill again--the characters' facial expressions and their postures reveal depth of feeling. And, as a fan, I have to say that Todd Klein's lettering (hand lettering!) meets his high standard once again--I have appreciated his work for years (just get a look at SANDMAN), and I am glad to see some more of it.

Some of the finer creators in the Vertigo stable have put together this project, and their combined talents make this book worthwhile.

Art is subjective, you either like it or you don't. Now, I'm not a Neil Young fan. Not because, I have a distaste for his music but because I don't know Neil Young or his music. I know "of" him. I know of him through sparse news clips throughout the years and as a band member in Rick James' early (late 1960's) Motown band. But neither tells me what the man or his music is about.

Since this was the case, I decided I needed to familiarize myself, at least, with the concept album before reading the graphic novel. I found an entire concert set that Young and his band Crazy Horse did at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto in June 2003. I think it's a great primer for the novel. I loved the music, btw.

GREENDALE: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL, is a generational tale about the Green family, a once-prominent family whose ingenuity created an industrial town, "Greendale," in a remote (fictionalized) Californian town. However, all is not what it seems with the Green women. Each woman had a psychic connection with the land and with every generation there was a call to each Green woman to "Be The Rain!" This call, presented to the ingénue, was a prophetic proclamation to address the social-economic needs of her community. Whereas the men in the Green family line seems emasculated and out of touch with current events, the women are single-mindedly ambitious and embrace the moment to challenge the voice that controls their circumstances whether it comes from Pennsylvania Avenue or ethereal.

Sun Green is the latest of the Green women who's been initiated into this secret-hereditary society. The issues of this day are the complications of global warming, Alaskan offshore drilling and the invasion of Iraq.

It does seem far-fetched that women from this once-wealthy clan can make a difference with global issues such as these. Even one, is beyond the efforts of a single individual, but this is a comic-novel. It is from a concept album from a man who has devoted many years to singing about and contributing to organizations geared toward environmental conservation and peaceful resolutions.

What I take from the book is that you have strong women, intelligent women characters who are active members of their community and not just an after-thought to the physiological needs to the male characters. I see a musician and three younger artists collaborating on a project to speak to the readership of graphic novels with the hopes of raising issues for discussion (although the anti-Bush doctrine is about 7 years too late, unfortunately), what I also see is the possibility that more musicians and artists working together to expand their vision and create more concept-album-graphic novel collaborations.

All in all, GREENDALE: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL is a groundbreaking multi-media genre.

I have to admit, I've never listened to the Greendale album, but this graphic novel makes me curious to listen to it.

Greendale covers a brief span in the life of Sun Green, starting with glimpses of her as a child. The meat of the of the book takes place over a few days, with Sun beginning to ask questions about her family's past. She's caught the notice of a mysterious & sinister man who seems to have some sort of supernatural powers. Sun has to figure out what exactly is going on as well as try to find her own place in the world as every she previously knew begins to shatter around her.

The artwork is easily the best part of this graphic novel. It is beautifully done & there's nice detail to everything. I really enjoyed pouring over the artwork in this book & reread it a few times just because the artwork was that nicely done.

Unfortunately, the weak point is the storyline. It really could have been fleshed out better- the graphic novel just seems to flash over some topics, spending little time on them when more definition would have been nice. It isn't difficult to figure out what's going on, but I really think that if the book had been better done it would have been a more satisfying read. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice read. It just isn't a great one.

Fans of Neil Young might like this because of the album, but I don't know if it will appeal to all graphic novel readers. It just doesn't bring anything new to the medium.

    Great book!

Greendale is a story loosely based on the work of Neil Young, as as I understand it, he served as a sort of executive producer for the book, guiding what the book became, but leaving the scripting and heavy lifting to Joshua Dysart, a writer whose talent unfortunately far outshadows his acclaim. Add in the best in coloring and lettering, with Dave Stewart and Todd Klein, and you've got one hell of a creative team working in service of Neil Young's story about a small town named Greendale, and the odd family who live there, the Greens.
