The Uncharted Path: An Autobiography Hardcover – November 1, 2011

4.7 out of 5 stars 322 ratings

Born poor in the wake of the Korean war, Lee Myung-Bak was destined for a life of poverty. But through intelligence and self-determination, he excelled in school, putting himself through college, hauling garbage six times a day to pay for tuition. He then took a low-level job at Hyundai, an organization of about 90 people at the time. Through a relentless work ethic and inability to compromise his beliefs, he rose to the role of CEO and found himself on a mission not just to expand the Hyundai corporation, but to grow South Korea from a nation of poverty to a G20 economy.

The Uncharted Path is the story of a man and nation driven to greatness by a conviction to liberty, commerce, and the belief that at the root of every success lies extreme perseverance and uncompromising principles. These principles and lessons would lead not only to success in business, but also developed a refreshing and unique perspective on the state of our globalizing world, and how nations and businesses must operate together to improve the lives of people everywhere.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Lee Myung-bak's election as president of the Republic of Korea in 2007 marked the capstone of a remarkable career for this energetic and visionary leader. Born into poverty in 1941, Lee briefly participated in the student activist movement of 1964 before going on to join the fledgling Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company the next year. Little more than a decade later he had risen to become CEO of what was by then a multinational corporation famous for its construction projects in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. After leaving Hyundai in 1992, Lee served two terms in the Korean National Assembly before being elected mayor of Seoul in 2002. As 10th president of the Republic, he has made "Green Growth" and sustainable development keystones of his administration, and hosted the G20 summit in Seoul in December 2010.

President Lee is a man who has a great story. He was born on December 19th 1941 and started work early on in life to help support his poor family. He worked his way through elementary and middle school, eventually finishing night classes at commercial High School in Pohang, a port city located in the southeastern tip of Korea. In recalling the past, President Lee said "The chronic poverty that haunted my family never disappeared until after I was in my 20s." After graduating from highschool, he enrolled in, and graduated from Korea University, at one point, working as a garbage collector in order to pay for his tuition.

After graduating from Korea University with a degree in Business Administration, President Lee joined Hyundai Engineering and Construction as an entry-level employee. Hyundai would eventually become one of Korea's largest and most profitable companies to date but when President Lee first entered, it was just another medium-sized enterprise with limited staff and little overseas experience. However, soon after joining the company, his hard-working style, his determination and limitless creativity all led him to be promoted through the ranks and he became CEO of the company after only twelve years, making him one of the youngest CEO's at that time.

As CEO, President Lee traveled far and established many important human networks which are still maintained to this day. His experience reaches across many continents, from the Middle East to the Far East, Southeast Asia, Russia, Europe and South America. His many legacies are still in full display in the numerous bridges and magnificent buildings around the world, most of them now enduring landmarks...........

This book helped me understand him so well. As I am in my late 20's, it has always been easy to get all malicious rumors of him from the media. Those made me almost believed everything without any doubt. But I guess I wasn't very sure about everything so I decided to give it a chance to read this book. Now I start to understand him not only as the president but as a man. I think his life has been so harsh unbelievably even after he was elected as the president. And his achievements haven't been really recognized at all.
I truly respect what he has done for my country and what he had done to make himself to be now. I really hope that those people not knowing anything but complaining no matter what realize later how hard he tried to make everything worked out for our country. I think people just take everything for granted. People are often unreasonable and self-centered. People would like to understand things the way as they want anyways. But I think he deserve to be judged right once. And I think when you read this book you will get to read the real story, not the one fabricated by people badmouthing him. No one can be judged by anyone until they get on the same position as he is on so at least gve it a chance.

Lee, Myung-Bak is a good storyteller. It seems to me that he wrote an exceptional book here without the promotion of a political or ideological viewpoint. He knows what he's talking about and can put it in a way that's easy to understand and not too boring. While he does explain about what is poverty and how to overcome it, it wasn't too much to put you to sleep. It was just the right amount to get his point across. I would recommend this book to anyone tries to escape from poverty.

"Nevertheless, we never used poverty as an excuse. Instead, poverty strengthened us. If a poor man sits waiting for handouts, he will never be able to escape poverty. To such a man, poverty will be a festering wound, never able to heal. On the other hand, poverty helped me and my siblings strengthen our resolve. We were determined to never let poverty smother us."(Chapter 1, The strength of poverty)

When I read this book, I realized that one man who had a vision and a dream even in harsh conditions and try to do his or her best can overcome his or her difficulties, achieving his or her goals and eventually can change the world.
President Mr. Lee Myungbak is the man who faced all the difficulties and overcame all of the challenges and finally made in a way he wanted.
I really want to recommend this book to anyone who has a child.
Because this book can give a lesson how hard the situation might be difficlut you can overcome and can achive in the end.
President Mr. Lee Myungbak is called like bulldoser which seems to be like a person very stern and obstinate but he sacrificed himself to achieve what he set a goal to be made for all the peole in a very positive way.
And in his ages he was one of the persons to make the country prosperous through his sacrifices and devotion.
I'd like to say that he is the real exemplary model to follow for the country development.
And I think that especially his entrepreneurship should be valued due to the fat that it has a great effect on everywhere in enhancing the country status in the world.
