Long before the word "Super Star" was coined, Saint-George was the original. Many people throughout history have been famous for one reason or another. Many have made great contributions to civilization and left great legacies. Their paintings and sculptures we still admire. Their discoveries have made our lives better; their music we still play and sing, but no one in history was as talented in so many areas as Saint-George. For a time, he was the greatest fencer in the world. He was an exceptional violinist and along with his teacher, Gossec, he pioneered the composition of the String Quartet. Even Mozart came to Paris to study this new form of music. Saint-George was an unequaled equestrian, an exceptional marksman and an elegant dancer. The wealthy copied the way he dressed, and the common people admired him as he walked through the streets, and whispered his name. He was a true Renaissance man and a "super star" in the Paris of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

This book is a very nice introduction to an unknown yet fascinating character from French Revolutionary period. As a side benefit, the chapter on the Haitian Revolution is a is also an excellent summary of THAT series of events as well. Saint-George had so many talents and adventures that even if you're not a fan of classical music or fencing or French history, you're sure to find this a good read.

This seems to have been made for a high school class. It is good to know the information, but I think it is rather watered down. Also when I research Le Chevalier de Saint George on a website dedicated to him there are far more details, which could be used to flesh out a discussion. He is portrayed by an actor who is darker than he is described in written historical accounts.

While this book is quite readable, and does lay out the basic fact of Joseph Bologne, as one of the great stories of 18th century France, the book besides having racist overtones mentioned elsewhere here in the reviews, is just flat out wrong about many of the basic facts of Le Chevalier de SAINT-GEORGES' LIFE. IT GIVES THE WRONG YEAR of his birth (actually 1745 NOT 1739), THE WRONG attribution of his father, the WRONG year of his coming to France, passes on a fanciful and dis proven attribute of his living in Saint Domingue before coming to France, etc., etc. The problem here is that MUCH of the historical record of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint George has become more kith than fact. Whil Smith acknowledges this, he has NOT done the necessary research to discover the truth, as his research almost ALL seems to be second or 3rd hand.

The ONLY truly well-researched biography I have been able to find is the book 'The Chevalier de Sait-Georges - Virtuoso of Sword and Bow' by Gabriel Banat. And UNFORTUNATELY that book - published in 2006 by Pendragon Press seems to be out of print. If you can find it, it iS WELL worth your search, and is truly the only source of information on this amazing man's life one can be sure is told from a depth of knowledge. And yet that book is SO deep in research, that it is difficult for a lay person to read, and lacks the ability to truly communicate astonishing adventurous spirit and epic range of this amazing man's life. Hopefully SOMEONE will build on the research of Banat and write a true AND epic biography sometime soon.

Having seen Chevalier in a muted performance in the 'Marie Antoinette' series, this short book goes into more depth about the man. Not only could he play the violin he was also a swordsman and a colonel in the Horse Hunters during the French Revolutionary Wars. He wrote a comedy titled 'Ernestine' in 1777 with Choderlos de Laclos who wrote 'Dangerous Liaisons'.
I didn't realise that La Chevaliere d'Eon was a man who decided to perform in women's clothing in his fifties.
Interesting that an opera singer and actresses signed a petition objecting to him being appointed director of the Royal Academy of Music because they didn't want to take orders from a Mulatto. It's a bit like actresses saying that they don't want to take direction from a black director in a feature film.

Am only half way through this book. It is a bit confusing and the author jumps about with the information. I am finding it a bit disjointed in places. I am enjoying learning about the Black Mozart who sounds like a great and very talented man.
