Book overview

The Uncanny X-Men Trading Cards features award-winning illustrator Jim Lee’s legendary X-Men art with this annotated, digest-size collection of the complete 1992 set—including 4 bonus cards!

Foreword by Edward Piskor

In 1992, Marvel Entertainment commissioned Jim Lee, the young superstar penciller behind
X-Men (1991) #1, the bestselling single-issue comic book of the modern era, to create all of the art for a new set of 105 trading cards—a set that would go on to become one of the most celebrated in Marvel history and the gold standard for non-sports trading-card artwork and design.

Lee was the first artist to create all of the original artwork for a Marvel card set; his dynamic character portraits, battle scenes, team shots, and innovative nine-card Danger Room puzzle cards helped fuel both the ‘90s boom of comic-book trading cards and the general public’s mania for all things X-Men. Fans of the chart-topping comics could turn to the cards for further insight into their favorite characters, as Marvel writers and editors included bios, stats, and trivia for each hero and villain.

The Uncanny X-Men Trading Cards: The Complete Series collects, for the first time, the front and back of each collectible card in the set—including Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Magneto, and Deadpool—along with select scans of Lee’s original and digitally remastered art. It also includes an introduction by and original interviews conducted by writer and set editor Bob Budiansky, with the Marvel staff who helped assemble, design, and create these iconic trading cards.

About the Author

Comic book illustrator Jim Lee is the editorial director of WildStorm Studios (which he founded in 1992) and the artist for many of DC Comics’ bestselling comic book and graphic novels, including All Star Batman & Robin,Batman: Hush, and Superman: For Tomorrow. He also serves as the creative director for the DC Universe Online video game. Prior to DC, he was one of the founding fathers of Image Comics and best known for his run on the X-Men for Marvel Comics, during which he cocreated such characters as Gambit and Agent Zero. In his spare time, Lee enjoys a good laugh or two.

Ed Piskor lives and draws out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His New York Times bestselling series Hip Hop Family Tree, which was originally serialized on Boing Boing, has gone back to print numerous times and won the 2015 Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work. His books include Red Room from Fantagraphics. His series for Marvel, X-Men: Grand Design, was released in 2017 to wide acclaim.

Bob Budiansky is an American comic-book creator and editor. During his decades-long tenure at Marvel he penciled Ghost Rider and created and wrote Sleepwalker. As editor, he oversaw Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Spider- Man, and eleven sets of Marvel trading cards in the early ‘90s, including the 1992 Impel X-Men trading card set. He is perhaps best known for writing The Transformers comic and naming and developing hundreds of Transformers characters for Hasbro Toys.

I was 12 when this series came out. The art was so captivating and I remember saving up to buy a full box from my local comic shop. I would bring my binder with these (and the first 3 Marvel Universe Trading Cards series) everywhere and just look at the art and read the card backs. The book captures the cards in dynamic detail with great information about the set before getting to the pages for each card front/back. The book also comes with 4 bonus cards that re-create the famous Jim Lee X-Men Issue 1, and a card compiling the awesome "Danger Room" scene from the last 9 cards in the set. The book cover underneath the dust jacket is a recreation of the box art from the trading card series - and the final bonus - is the back of the dust jacket is a print of the Jim Lee X-Men promo poster that was sent to the comic shops to help market/sell the trading card packs. If there were more stars to give, I would.

This is a treat! Especially for many of us Jim Lee X-Men fans of the early 90’s that grew up to his work! Publisher “Abrams ComicArts” put together this little collection of Jim’s X-Men series 1 trading cards in a handy dandy hardcover book! All 100 cards are featured in this beautifully produced book a presented as a “digest” style format (think of the old school TV Guide mags you got at your local grocery store) I’m familiar with Abrams style of books, they have a similar one with early garbage pail kids cards I picked up and I’m definitely gonna check out the Star Wars trading card series they have available!

I still own the original cards of this series! The book is a wonderful compliment to Lee’s work and celebrates its 30th anniversary! 16 bucks is not a bad price!

It also includes some history on the art/cards. Bonus it comes with some actual cards too and the cover if removed and unfolded is a big X-men poster. It is a digest size so smaller than a regular book but it calls this out in the product description and in the listed dimensions so not sure why some are complaining about the size. Recommended for X-Men fans!

This is purely an opinion piece so take it with a grain of salt but I will post some facts.

1) I wish I had looked at the whole page to see the real dimensions of this book as I erroneously assumed that this would be a full-sized book and not a pocket-sized book, something that was shown further down the page.

2) Continuing with the above I wish that this was a full-sized book to show off Jim Lee's amazing artwork better. Marvel released a comic version of their Masterpiece card art so this was the perfect opportunity to do the same in this hardcover form. Also, the cards have been recolored in recent years and used as comic book covers so the dimensions are visible. Also, it would have been nice if the book showcased the recolored arts.

3) I was hoping the original card art would encompass the entire page. I see that they put commentary under the art but that could have been down on the back page that featured the card backs, you know, where the text was originally.

On the positive side, I do like all the extras that are showcased throughout the book. The book cover is a mini poster done in the same style as the X-Men Vol 2 #1 deluxe edition. I also love how the hardcover is the alternate box art featuring Wolverine. I almost wish there was another version featuring Wolverine on the book cover and Magneto on the hardcover but again, that's just my wishful thinking..
