The pictures are high quality and colorful. Information is well-organized with lots of tips and fun things on the side. The paper is also good quality and thick, so it's not easily bent by over-eager little hands.
I also like that it creates asks reflective questions that reach out to the child on a personal level. For example, when teaching about orbit, it asks "How many times have you been around the sun? (Hint: how many years old are you?)" This kind of real life association is very helpful for getting children (or anyone, for that matter) to grasp new concepts.
Update: We got this for my son a couple of months ago and he's still crazy about it. Normally the novelty would have worn off by now. Instead, he's asking for the other "LIttle Kid's First Big Books". And I'll be happy to indulge him now that I know how great they are!
I would highly recommend this book.
We love:
- how engaging these books are!!!
- information is just right. Not too much.
- not overly textbook or boring
- amazing photographs and graphics
- my kids absorbs the information and have practically memorized it all because this book is so well done
HOWEVER,
We do not love:
- The binding is faulty and the pages eventually detach and fall out over time. We keep taping them back in.
This has happened with multiple of these books, and it is frustrating. And this is with gentle use. We expect more from National Geographic and hope they remedy this.
