Senior Investigator Shana Merchant must dredge up dark secrets and old grudges if she's to solve the murder of a prominent local citizen in the Thousand Islands community she now calls home.
"Wegert nicely balances plot and characterization. Fans of Denise Mina’s Alex Morrow will be pleased" - Publishers Weekly Starred Review
"Louise Penny meets Ruth Ware in this small town mystery that bubbles with secrets and intrigue" -Charlie Donlea, internationally bestselling author of Twenty Years Later
"An atmospheric, sophisticated thriller with layers upon layers of secrets" - Sarah Stewart Taylor, author of the Maggie D'arcy mysteries
"A bone-chilling mystery that crackles with suspense"- Joanna Schaffhausen, author of the Annalisa Vega novels
The body is discovered on Wolfe Island, under the shadow of an enormous wind turbine. Senior Investigator Shana Merchant, arriving on the scene with fellow investigator Tim Wellington, can't shake the feeling that she knows the victim - and the subsequent identification sends shockwaves through their community in the Thousand Islands of Upstate New York.
Politics, power, passion . . . there are dark undercurrents in Shana's new home, and finding the killer means dredging up her new friends and neighbors' old grudges and long-kept secrets.
That is, if the killer is from the community at all. For Shana's keeping a terrible secret of her own: eighteen months ago she escaped from serial killer Blake Bram's clutches. But has he followed her, to kill again?
The Shana Merchant novels are a brilliant blend of chilling psychological thriller and gripping police procedural, set in an atmospheric island community with a small-town vibe.

Shana Merchant is a badass investigator who's latest victim is someone she knows. Someone whose death is a gut punch! But if the killer thought they'd break her down to the point where she couldn't find them, they'd better think again. What a page turner!

In book 3 of the Shana Merchant series, Shana is still hunting down her cousin, Blake Bram, while simultaneously trying to find who killed a disgraced former state representative.
• 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓
Shana Merchant has been searching for her cousin ever since he first abducted her and held her captive nearly 2 years prior. Now, constantly on the lookout, she’s facing a new murder investigation. Was Bram the killer, or are they looking for someone else connected to their victim?

I haven’t read the first 2 books of this series, but Tessa did a great job of keeping me up to date with the events of the prior novels. I really loved Shana. She’s strong, quick witted, and not afraid of a fight. She hasn’t stopped looking for her cousin and won’t rest until he’s caught. I also enjoyed the mystery of finding out who killed their Jane Doe at the beginning of the story. I was always surprised when their clues went cold, and I loved who ended up being the murderer. I really hadn’t expected that ending either! All in all, this is another great police procedural series!

Too bad it won't be released in August.
I could've read for the cycle. I read Death in the Family in May, The Dead Season in June, and the latest, Dead Wind, in July. And yes, I too will miss some iteration of "Death" in the next title - I can't be the only one who, while enthralled by Wegert's crisp writing, came up with their own "Death" title.
Death follows (yay, I got it in) our beloved Shay, senior investigator for the NYS Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Alexandria Bay, close to the Canadian border.
If not by way of her chosen profession, then surely by the ever looming wraithlike killer, who has become the Candyman of the Thousand Islands.
"He was the bogeyman under the bed. As much a myth as a man."
Bram is back.
Trey Hayes, the nine-year-old boy who Bram kidnapped in The Dead Season, is back as well to provide some interesting tips about Bram's whereabouts.
If Bram is anything ...
"He is nowhere and everywhere, nothing and all."
The hunt for the featureless ghost continues.
Five months later, connected developer and aspiring politico Hope Oberon is found strangled at the base of a wind turbine. What at first appears to be a mere distraction (relatively speaking - I'm not heartless), has political, environmental, and economic implications; not the least of which could tear the burgeoning town of A-Bay apart.
And more importantly, the killing has Bram written all over it.
In 19 months Shay had gone from "a well-adjusted detective with the NYPD to a victim, to someone's fiancée." She was none of those things anymore.
She was someone new.
And this is where Wegert goes to work. Her melding of police procedural, longstanding small town ripples, and psychological thriller is sublime.
"You don't know what I can do Shay. If you did, you'd win this game every time."
Dead Wind will take your breath away not only for what Shay must endure; but for readers of the series especially, the emotional toll its ending will take on you.
When we left off with Shana, she was still in NYC. She had followed her fiancé to Alexandria Bay in very upstate NY, right on the Canadian border. However, they have called off their engagement and Shana has moved into her own tiny apartment. She is working with her partner Tim to investigate a woman’s body on a Canadian island that they are called into investigate when it’s realized that the victim is American. Some of the circumstances match the same as past crimes of a serial killer that Shana has investigated and even was a victim herself. Could her past becoming to haunt her?
This was a wild ride! I love all of Tessa’s novels because they feature strong women who are excellent at their jobs, and Shana is a prime example. I really enjoyed the change to upstate NY and dealing with the Canadian police was something I haven’t read about before. Looking forward to more from Shana!
Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours @severnhouseimprint and Tessa for my ebook. Dead Wind is out now and the 4th installment The Kind to Kill is out Dec 6!
