Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Converts to organic, power, and other good-for-you foods tend to be in-your-face proselytizers, promoting acai berries or quinoa or yacon (a South America tuber) regardless of price or local availability. In a sense, they stray from today’s locavore and seasonal ingredients trends—finding nori sheets, for example, in a nonurban neighborhood is far less satisfying than putting together a broccoli and nut salad. Morris is no different, though certainly not as strident. She starts with her personal nutritional journey as she began to understand the power of Aggregate Nutrient Density Index (ANDI). The more than 100 recipes aside, Morris details what’s needed to create a superfood kitchen and pantry, cataloging ingredients from acai berries to yacon with flavor notes, recommended forms, and best uses. Techniques, too, receive their own focus, with discussions of equipment conventional (e.g., blender) as well as nontraditional, such as the dehydrator. Helpful appendixes include a superfood substitution cheat sheet, conversion charts, how to make nut and seed milks, frequently asked questions, and an ingredient resources guide. --Barbara Jacobs

This has quickly become my number one staple in the kitchen! I use it every day, the pages are so dog-earred and splattered it looks like I've had it for years! The presentation of the book is genius, you can tell a lot of intelligent thought went into all of its aspects, and the result is an absolute work of art. The recipes are incredible, I've probably made at least 3/4 of them, and they have all been crazy delicious and simple to make. I really appreciate the comprehensive introduction to a lot of new ingredients and a myriad of ways to use them creatively- for instance plant based sources of complete protein like chlorella powder and hemp seeds. I love the hemp hummus, I've made gallons and gallons of it and people always say it's the best hummus they've ever tasted by far! Cheesy kale chips, nori-bean lettuce wraps, mochi pizza, goddess kale salad, protein quinoa bowl (had never heard of quinoa flakes before but they have now replaced oatmeal for us!), sesame flatbread, chocolate hemp oat bars- these are all things that I love to make again and again. This book has really changed the way we eat, making it easy and delicious to eat a healthy plant based diet and feel amazing doing it. I used to cook with meat a lot, both me and my husband "craved" meat, but now that we have almost completely cut out meat and dairy and are cooking from this book, we are both so amazed to find that our cravings have stopped, and we feel more energized. I am so happy to have this book and will continue to use it every day for years to come! I grew up with the awesome moosewood cookbooks, and I feel this book will have that classic status in my kitchen while my children are growing up! Thank you Julie for this invaluable masterpiece, you are truly an inspiration!

This book is fantastic! I loved reading the introductory part where Julie talks about each superfood ingredient and what they are good for, I was already familiar with some superfoods but it was so interesting to read so much more detail about them and how to get the best out of them.
I have already tried several recipes and was not disappointed with any of them, they are very creative, if you're looking for a book with new and interesting ideas you will love this one. Don't be intimidated by the superfood ingredients, you can choose a few to experiment and find out which ones you want to incorporate into your kitchen routine, if you haven't yet! I had already been exposed to many of them but am loving the new and vibrant flavors I had never had before and learned about after getting this book.
There are very simple recipes like BBQ sweet potato fries (which are baked btw) that come together very quickly and use a very unique combination of spices, light and interesting cauliflower risotto, amazing salad dressings and salad dishes that make you want to have a huge salad for a meal, and the best banana bread I've ever made, it's called banana seed bread, it's loaded with hemp seeds and is so delicious, nutritious and satisfying!
Lots of great pictures on the book.

This is a very good cookbook, with some excellent and unusual recipes. I don't know if the author will mind, but many of these are actually quite good with meat. I made the Incan Patties and added 3/4 lb of lean grass fed ground beef. It was extremely good! The Black Bean protein patties were somewhat more difficult. They didn't stay together properly with just added ground beef. Adding an egg was necessary to get a coherent patty.

The Pomegranate Glazed Steaks (substituting actual grass-fed sirloin steaks for the portabello mushrooms) was awesome. I tenderized it with a fork and let is marinate in the glaze for a couple of hours. Then, I cooked it medium-well with the grill on low.

For the Greens Soup with clarified cucumber, I tried adding a few tablespoons of yogurt. It was good both with and without yogurt.

The ingredients for many of the recipes are a mixture of inexpensive and widely available (e.g., pomegranate, beans), a little hard to find (chia seeds), and obscure/expensive (e.g., sea buckthorn). There is a list of substitutions for many ingredients in the book. Unlike baking, it doesn't seem that substitutions or using moderately more or less of an ingredient has caused any real problems.

I also have Julie Morris' Superfood Smoothie book. It's similarly good.

Great sounding (and tasting!) soups, though many ingredients are hard to come by; will require ordering online. Great book for the adventurous cook, though; nice photography. Books arrived mysteriously without dust jackets (I ordered two); totally blank cover, which is unappealing. .

I am so glad I ordered this book. In the intro, she really takes the time to break down various superfoods and why they're important. In each recipe, there's a symbol next to each superfood she incorporates. Everything I've made so far is delicious. It really helps you think differently about how veggies really do taste when you add things like avocado, miso paste, etc. to them or puree them into soups.

While I disagree that the ingredients are super expensive, this book is not for someone on a strict food budget. Unfortunately, nuts and seeds are more expensive than potato chips and cheap "filler" foods. But there's a price to pay for eating the latter over time as well. If you're willing to give up a few other things in life that probably aren't so healthy, cooking at least some of her recipes each week, even if you can only do it for lunch or dinner is most definitely worth it.

I really liked Ms Morris' Smoothie receipe book so I purchased this as a follow up. The information about each of the superfoods is very informative and a good reference but I have been disappointed in the recipes. I have been vegan for several years and I am always looking for new fun dishes to prepare. For someone just beginning this life style change, it might be a good addition to your kitchen. Just wasn't for me.

I love this book. It is what I have been looking for a long time. It has a combination of easy to find ingredients and challenging ones. It is well written, good outcomes pretty much all the time. Nice photos. In general, I think its really worth it.
I think its a nice vegan book, its elegant, which is not always the case in the veggie world.
