My (Underground) American Dream: My True Story as an Undocumented Immigrant Who Became a Wall Street Executive Hardcover – September 13, 2016
What does an undocumented immigrant look like? What kind of family must she come from? How could she get into this country? What is the true price she must pay to remain in the United States?
JULISSA ARCE knows firsthand that the most common, preconceived answers to those questions are sometimes far too simple-and often just plain wrong.
On the surface, Arce's story reads like a how-to manual for achieving the American dream: growing up in an apartment on the outskirts of San Antonio, she worked tirelessly, achieved academic excellence, and landed a coveted job on Wall Street, complete with a six-figure salary. The level of professional and financial success that she achieved was the very definition of the American dream. But in this brave new memoir, Arce digs deep to reveal the physical, financial, and emotional costs of the stunning secret that she, like many other high-achieving, successful individuals in the United States, had been forced to keep not only from her bosses, but even from her closest friends.
From the time she was brought to this country by her hardworking parents as a child, Arce-the scholarship winner, the honors college graduate, the young woman who climbed the ladder to become a vice president at Goldman Sachs-had secretly lived as an undocumented immigrant. In this surprising, at times heart-wrenching, but always inspirational personal story of struggle, grief, and ultimate redemption, Arce takes readers deep into the little-understood world of a generation of undocumented immigrants in the United States today- people who live next door, sit in your classrooms, work in the same office, and may very well be your boss. By opening up about the story of her successes, her heartbreaks, and her long-fought journey to emerge from the shadows and become an American citizen, Arce shows us the true cost of achieving the American dream-from the perspective of a woman who had to scale unseen and unimaginable walls to get there.

Arce takes us on a breathtaking climb to the highest pinnacles of Wall Street while holding fast to a deep secret. The path to her success at Goldman Sachs is certainly inspiring. But it is the telling of her story with humor, grace and insight that is the real achievement.―Lisa Endlich, author of New York Times bestseller Goldman Sachs: The Culture of Success
There are so many moments in Julissa's journey that numbed my body and transported me fully into her harrowing experience. Her story broke my heart and then made it jump for joy.―America Ferrera, actor, producer
A heart-rendering testament to the resiliency and determination of one woman who dared to dream. It crosses borders - literally and metaphorically.―Turney Duff, New York Times bestselling author of The Buy Side
Julissa Arce's story is a must read. The twist and turns of her life keep you on the edge of your seat. She lives with a secret that could destroy her life every day, while rising through the ranks of Wall Street. You will cry and you will be inspired with the will of a woman who embodies the real American Dream.―Nely Galán, Entrepreneur and Producer

Julissa Arce is a nationally recognized author, speaker, and social justice advocate who, with America Ferrera, is currently developing and executive producing a television series for a major network optioned from her bestselling memoir, My (Underground) American Dream. Her young adult memoir, Someone Like Me is used in classrooms across the country. Her forthcoming book, You Sound Like a White Girl: The Case for Rejecting Assimilation is a dual polemic and manifesto, where Julissa dives into and tears apart the lie that assimilation leads to belonging. Instead Julissa offers a bold new promise: Belonging only comes through celebrating yourself, your history, your culture, and everything that makes you uniquely you. Only in turning away from the white gaze can we truly make America beautiful. An America where difference is celebrated, heritage is shared and embraced, and belonging is for everyone. Through unearthing veiled history and reclaiming her own identity, Julissa shows us how to do this.
She was named one of People en Español’s 25 Most Powerful Woman of 2017 and 2019 Woman of the Year by the City of Los Angeles. She is a leading voice in the fight for social justice, immigrant rights and education equality. Julissa has contributed to The New York Times, TIME, Buzzfeed News, Crooked Media, CNBC, and is one of the hosts of Crooked Conversations. She has provided political commentary across numerous TV networks including NBC News, Bloomberg TV, CNN, and MSNBC.
In order to help other young people in similar circumstances, Julissa co-founded the Ascend Educational Fund (AEF). AEF is a college scholarship and mentorship program for immigrant students in New York City, regardless of their ethnicity, national original or immigration status. She also serves on the board of directors of the National Immigration Law Center. She was officially sworn in as an American citizen in August of 2014.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMost inspirational book I have read in YEARS! It's less about "hispanic demographics" (as categorized above) than about one girl's learning through living the human side of US immigration policies. As Julissa grows towards womanhood, the pains and challenges imposed by Mexican poverty and US restrictions are revealed as they are lived. She was taken from the lovely colonial hill-town of Taxco, MX. to San Antonio at age 11 by her hard-working mother. Julissa spoke no English, was made to feel very much an outsider.
At age 14, she learned that her (tourist) visa had expired. If she returned to Mexico for her dreamed of "quinceañera" (15 year old girls' coming of age party) she would never be able to return to her mother in the US. Her awareness unfolds slowly. Her narrative felt less like reading, and more like a diary, a journal, or a conversation with one of the few friends Julissa felt she could dare to confide in.
Drawing strength from her mother's example, she excelled in high school, and in the elite Business School at the Univ. of Texas. She believed that she could achieve financial success, and thus solve her immigration problems. While making rapid progress, her grandmother died. Later, her father died. In neither case was she able to attend the funeral.
She earned an internship at Goldman Sachs, then a permanent job. In three years, she was a Vice President at the most prestigious investment bank in the world. All the while she felt subject to her "undocumented American dream" suddenly ending at any moment, in the event of any deep background check or traffic stop.
She sorted out her immigration status, decided to leave Goldman, and to become an activist and voice Latinas (and Latinos) promoting educational advancement and immigration reform. She is a major figure -- strengthened by overcoming so many obstacles -- I believe now destined to play a hugely important role in the American dreams of millions of immigrants young and old.
We Anglos have MUCH to learn from Latin culture, among other things to take the time to live, to smell the flowers, to care more about others --- even WHILE working hard and achieving. My first realization of this came at age 19, when my family rented for a month a house in Julissa's hometown of Taxco.
To this day, my favorite recollections is of Paco's Bar, with its balcony overlooking Taxco's town square, church -- and the life of the town.I loved hearing pencil-thin Ruben playing a small guitar with portly Benjamin playing a massive guitarron -- a tenor and a bass singing "Taxco de mis Amores, Jardincito de Flores". I felt a wonderful vibe there, made several good local friends.
Anyone who leaves such a congenial town, struggles through fear and uncertainty for years in a new land, succeeds big-time on Wall St. -- soon moves onto more important work -- warrants our attention. In my mind, the future of the US depends, in no small degree, upon how well the US receives and provides opportunity to those who have immigrated and will immigrate to our country.
Ivanka Trump, PLEASE read this book, and have a long talk with your dad about it - !!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2017Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI recently started this crazy workout plan where I do an hour of cardio every morning BEFORE my hour of weights. So naturally, extra brain stimulation was necessary on the Stairmaster to complement my summer bod pursuit. Enter Julissa's book...
This is not a book I would typically buy--because I have the literary interests of a teenage girl--but when I read she was a fellow Texan, I had to give it a try. I'm so glad I did!
What I like most about this book is the author's honesty. She does not paint herself to be the picture of perfection, nor does she shy away from revealing the mistakes she made along her incredible journey. Julissa is a real person, with real faults, navigating the harsh reality of a frustrating immigration system. Family, friends, faith, federal law, she talks about it all, explaining how these forces healed, hurt, and helped her rise to the level of success she so rightfully deserves.
My (Underground) American Dream takes you past the "problem" of immigration and introduces you to the PEOPLE of immigration. If you want a deeper understanding of why "aliens" don't just "get in line," you need to read this book. You need to leave your comfort zone and the desensitizing statistics of CNN reports and FOX News debates. Go underground, where the real story is lived by millions of PEOPLE every day, and let Julissa tell you her version. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
PS: I've lost 10 lbs. since reading My (Underground) American Dream. No correlation--just proud of my progress ;)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhat a timely read! Julissa Arce explains what it's really like to be an undocumented immigrant. She describes the experience of entering the country entirely legally as a child on a tourist visa, and how she assimilates into American society, helping her parents (also here legally) with their business. Arce recounts how she goes to school, learns to speak English, gets thrown in at the deep end, and rapidly becomes a successful and productive member of society, despite having to live under the constant fear of being deported for having an expired visa. My Greek and Lithuanian grandparents didn't have these legal obstacles making it perilous to participate in the American dream -- Arce makes a powerful case for reforming our immigration laws. Conservatives take note: people come to this country because the market demands their labor; this was the case 100 years ago, when my family came over, and it's still true. Immigrants made this country great, and we should be proud that so many people want to come here and seek success. Arce's book is also a lot of fun to read -- it's a personal story, not a political tract, and a lot of her experiences are common to any typical working-class American family (although I didn't go to private schools, as she did!). Kudos to state-level initiatives like the Texas laws that allowed her to get financial aid and go to college like any other qualified American student. This book should be essential reading for anyone concerned about immigration issues -- on any and all sides of the political spectrum.
