Raymond E. Barrett's Build-It-Yourself Science Laboratory is a classic book that took on an audacious task: to show young readers in the 1960s how to build a complete working science lab for chemistry, biology, and physics--and how to perform experiments with those tools. The experiments in this book are fearless and bold by today's standards--any number of the experiments might never be mentioned in a modern book for young readers! Yet, many from previous generations fondly remember how we as a society used to embrace scientific learning.
This new version of Barrett's book has been updated for today's world with annotations and updates from Windell Oskay of Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories, including extensive notes about modern safety practices, suggestions on where to find the parts you need, and tips for building upon Barrett's ideas with modern technology. With this book, you'll be ready to take on your own scientific explorations at school, work, or home.

I homeschool my 7th grader and we are tackling chemistry this year. This is a great resource to help us fill out our chemistry set without spending a fortune. I love that you don't have to be limited to store-bought stets, but can expand on your own. I initially borrowed this book from our library and loved it so much I purchased it for our home library.

Not a bad book, but the things in it are dated. It's like you are building a science laboratory from the 1950s. Now this isn't necessarily wrong as many things haven't really changes since then in regards to the kinds of experiments you might perform in such a lab, but that detail is not really mentioned in the book description.

This is the same book I remember as a kid in the early 70's. I loved this book as a kid.

Wow, does this look like fun. I love that they've updated it to provide safety information more relevant for today, but didn't leave stuff out because it might be dangerous. Into each life a little danger must fall. Wear goggles...

~ This is a great book, a must for those interested in science labs.

Got my hopes up with this book thinking it'd be more advanced level diy lab equipment. Great buy if you have small children that enjoy science not a great buy if you're a university chemistry major looking for home lab equipment.

Learn bangs-and-stinks science. And probably survive.

This book is updated, but maintains the spirit of kids' science books before the wussification of America. You can get hurt if you don't follow procedures with care. If you're stupid and careless, you can even kill yourself and/or others. You can also burn down your house or do enough damage to earn a few years of free room & board from Uncle Sam. If you take reasonable precautions, however--and these precautions are meticulously described--you will end up with a college-level understanding of experimental science. And have a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

Science experiments for the brave and curious.

A book that ideally all children should have and all adults with children should be familiar with. What's better than to encourage curiosity of nature in growing minds ? A lot of the science in the book may be too hard for many parents to explain satisfactorily to children, but those children privileged enough to have scientifically minded parents can get a lot out of this book. Works well for older aged individuals fascinated by what nature reveals to us with simple experiments too.
