This book is especially important to read and add to your Alzheimer's library because Michal is living with Alzheimer's. He is well spoken, intelligent and able to relate to professionals and non-professionals alike when it comes to living with Alzheimer's. I remember my husband wanting to join a group that would allow him to talk to others about his own experience, fears, and options. I was unable to find any such group for him here in Maine back in 2003. At that time he had just been diagnosed with his vascular dementia, a business professor for 15 years and previously an officer in the Air Force for a 21-year career, he was curious to get as much information as he could. Michael has contributed articles to my monthly newsletter and continues to be a great inspiration/support to me personally and professionally. He is right in his goal to improve the care we provide the millions who are living with Alzheimer's and also to change our perspective on long-term care. I have Alz. Reading is very difficult. I read this book within 24 hours. Michael gives a chilling and realistic account of being a young professional facing life with a compromised brain. Michael gives detailed accounts of his disabilities and how he deals with them. The emotional difficulties are also addressed. Alz. has many of the same symptoms of depression and anxiety. This book is also a story of a person who takes on the disease and does not back down.

I recommend this to anyone with Alz. that wants more out of life than just giving into the disease. I recommend this to professionals especially those who diagnose dementia because tests alone can be deceptive, the interview is so important because one has to understand the severity of the disease. This book gives great detail and insight into what it is like living with Alz.. A caregiver will be given insight into what a person with Alz. is dealing with.

This book at times is very raw but leaves one better educated and hopeful that people like Michael exist and doing their best to advance the Alz. cause.

Helping my father with Alzheimer's has been a difficult task. Throughout the process, I wanted to learn all I could about the disease and how it felt to him. Many times while reading Michael's book, I thought, "That must have been how Dad felt." Michael's story is one of long and lonely years, tying to get someone to listen to the changes that were taking place and get the help he needed. The disease of Alzheimer's already affects millions of people and those numbers will be growing. I hope this book helps the medical community to understand that they must listen to the clients in their offices. And for the rest of us, to show compassion for those who have this awful disease.
