Rose Wilder Lane an American journalist, travel writer, novelist, and political theorist, lived from 1886 until 1968. She was the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and widely considered a silent collaborator on the Little House series. She is noted – with Ayn Rand and Isabel Paterson – as one of the founding mothers of the American libertarian movement. This is her non-fiction book (1943), one that had a huge impact on American libertarian thought in the 20th century. Here we have an eloquent hymn to human energy and its creative power. Her prose is stark and strong, the product of decades of experience in attempting to get readers to listen, and succeeding.

I stumbled across this book in an Amazon review and I am so glad I did. More than any other book I have read, this one tells the story of the United States of America in the context of the story of human freedom throughout the ages, and makes one appreciate how rare and unique this gift we have inherited (and often take for granted). Rose Wilder Lane is uncompromising, but also inspiring. God is part of the equation of freedom, and freedom is part of the natural order that allows human energy its full expression. Authority, in the form of governmental control, is what stifles human energy and has unceasingly stymied human progress. While written during World War II, I think her observations are just as accurate, and her warnings now more than ever need to be heard. Her recounting of history is unconventional, but seems accurate to me (I've read enough history to be a fair judge). Everyone, especially every American, should read this book to understand the unique and special legacy we've inherited and should strive to preserve. If you can't get a hold of a copy, it is also available via the author's biography on Wikipedia.

The book covered the "economic interactions" of peoples from early beginnings of time up to the present time, which was the 1950's when she wrote the book. Because she was born about 1886, she had the experience of America (and the world) before modern times so was able to speak from a very broad scope of experience, since tremendous discoveries and inventions made such great progress in America in that period of time. She personally advanced from a communist mentality to full-on capitalism as she aged and observed the "goings-on" as well as being able to look back at what had actually happened in the business world, banking world, and government. She had a great analytical sense of the world and wrote very well about it which should be known widely rather than being known for the TV series "Little House on the Prairie" (mostly her mother's experiences). She was also a friend of Isabel Patterson and Ayn Rand and actually predated them on the subject of freedom in America, a topic that has been seriously derailed in America.

This book is explosive. Other reviews have mainly done it plenty of justice.

The point I want to add is that the book suffers slightly from poor editing, but I believe I have an explanation for that.

Ms. Lane was a novelist, but also an essayist. She is sometimes listed as a "journalist" but most of her non-fiction work was "op-ed" rather than factual reporting. Reading the book I noticed that it came across as very coherent in segments, but overall it seemed somewhat disjointed with strange repetitions that come across as almost hypnotic.

Considering her background as a popular essayist or columnist, I realized that the book is not one, continuous narrative, but a collection of separate articles written by her over the years. Whoever compiled the assorted shorter works into one volume, Ms. Lane or an editor, they did not make this fact readily apparent, nor did they make sufficient effort to blend and link the sections into a more consistent narrative.

I have been avid to recommend the book to people, but the discontinuity made me hesitate because the book, as such, does seems slightly flawed. Having intuited the reason for the lack of "flow," I now whole-heartedly (but with this caveat) recommend the book to anyone with an interest in the ideology of individualism, liberty and human axiology.

Best book I have ever read (and I read a lot) perhaps in general but especially as a treatise on the history of mankind and slavery of the masses to the will of the few through government which only exists to hold a monopoly on force and thereby effectively abuses that power against the people. The author is regarded as the mother of the Libertarian movement, and for good cause as I have seen no other person so adeptly sum up all of recorded history let alone of our Republic, inclusive of a plain english expose on why America is the first nation on earth ever to try and succeed in establishing a right to individual freedom via a new form of government called Republicanism that was instituted precisely because of and by the founding fathers, amongst the most educated men on affairs of all history and forms of politics, knew that democracy (from the Greek root Demos, "village", and in more detail from Wikipedia "Democracy (Greek: δημοκρατία, Dēmokratia literally "rule of the commoners"") never once worked in all of recorded history precisely because it always subjugates the will of a "minority" to the "majority" via corruption of politics, and always ultimately ends with a ruling tyrant followed by a revolution of the people, which has also held true for all forms of government. Religion is also clearly expounded upon, having also historically been used as a tool of power wielded against the many by the few, with historical reference to the wars waged thereunder, timing and actual place of origin (not America) as well as political power motivated reasons for separation between church and state, the revolution for freedom being 160 years continuously in America before the revolution as commonly taught (through "standardized education" by the "Department of Education"), and how America was the literal catalyst for the French revolution as well as the spread of Republicanism aka individual freedom all throughout Europe initially, which was sadly defeated not long thereafter, as well as across the rest of the world that has continued to this day but is daily challenged by the threat of democracy, which is a ploy by those in power to reestablish control of human beings through trickery to convince them that it is them acting in their best interest by acting in the best interest of all. Perhaps the most powerful book I have ever read aside from Autobiography of a Yogi and other texts by Self Realization Fellowship. Read, learn, and share, in the name of God given free will and individual freedoms!!!

It is printed with someone else’s underlining and scribbling and on a lot of the pages, the words in the sentences aren’t even aligned. That really distracts. This is not a legitimate publisher. Great book, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exciting 20th Century American Social History book for Creative Teens and Adults!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 28, 2019
Although this book by Rose Wilder Lane is factual, those who enjoy reading novels will LOVE THIS BOOK!!! It should be on every secondary school reading list because it summarises social history and the rise and fall of empires and civilizations throughout man's evolution on Earth. Rose Wilder Lane, American pioneer and free thinker, focuses on life in 20th Century America and the reasons behind the creation of the American Constitution.
I have no interest in History or collecting and remembering data, therefore this eloquently written book about human energy was informative and memorable because of the theme of Truth running through it.
I recommend this book to teenagers and young adults: an artistic History book!
