- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2024I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. As someone who's a fan of vampires and werewolves, this one definitely was a fun read for me. One thing I especially liked about this book was the twists on werewolves. They hardly ever get much attention, so this book definitely gives them some much needed time in the spotlight. Hope to see more from this author!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2017I'll admit a novel about vampires and werewolves does not normally make it onto my reading list. I connected with Jessica online through social media and as an author myself wanted to support an indie writer with a passion for the written word. Since I don't read this genre I can't compare it to anything else, but I was pleasantly surprised once I started reading this debut novel. Beyond The Veil pulled me in from the first chapter and never let me go. The characters were well developed and the writing style had a fresh feel to it. It's always exciting when an author's words transport you and you can visualize the story as the written words on each page becomes a scene in your head. Jessica Majzner did a wonderful job doing just that. Well done, looking forward to the next novel and where the story goes from here.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2016I'm not normally a reader of YA fiction, but this had vampires and werewolves so I gave it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised! Unlike a lot of novels in this genre, this is a refreshingly unsentimental story that just happens to involve a young protagonist. Natalya is flawed, credible, and relatable. The supporting characters, most especially the werewolves, were well-developed. I loved the fact that the author created her own fantasy world to set the story in. It has an Eastern European feel and kind of reminded me a bit of the old classic Universal films and their fictional Vaseria. I also appreciated the fact that the story doesn't wrap up with a neat bow and a "happily ever after", the characters learn from their experience but they face a cost for doing so.
All in all, this is an excellent YA novel for fans of the genre!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2022This book was fun to read.
The criticism I can get is that some of scene descriptions were a little wordy. I felt the character development was very good and for me that is a big part of keeping the story interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2016I don't read many books, but this particular one caught my interest. As I kept reading, the story was playing in my mind as a movie. The descriptive details give you a vivid image of what the author is portraying.
The relationship between Natalya and her Father reminds me of of Pocahontas and her Father. No mother, protective of their daughter, leader to their people, ECT. As I was reading the dialogue of the Father, the voice of Pocahontas's Father came into play. Made reading even more interesting. Its so cool as you keep reading and begin to see the importance of each character's role and how they all play a big part.
I haven't finished the book yet, but will be very soon. Can't put it down! This book will def get even the non-readers reading ;)
Can't wait to finish this one and read the sequel when it comes out!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2016This is a YA novel filled with drama, fighting, war, and death. I enjoyed Jessica Majzner's depictions of werewolves and vampires. I thought she did a nice job of showing that her "monsters" were more than just villains.
I liked the premise of the story, however I had to knock a star off for editing errors. Hated to do it, but I had to be fair. Most stories are bound to have a typo or two. This story had more than a few typos. Each time I ran into a typo or editing error, it temporarily jarred me out of the scene.
I also knocked off a star for missed details. Again, I didn't like doing this, but the details are the stuff that make up a great story. This novel takes place over the course of approximately three months. The last chapters take place during the winter season. Strangely enough, I had no trouble believing in a world filled with vampires and werewolves. I did have a difficult time believing in a17 year old human girl traveling on horseback in a blizzard and camping in a cave in winter. As a reader, I guess I'm NOT supposed to worry about the realities of taking care of a horse while traveling/camping in the great icy outdoors, but I know I would have gotten much more enjoyment from this book if the details had be more realistic. There was an entire chapter that told, rather than showed our main character's time spent in werewolf territory. That should have been fleshed out a bit more. If I knew more about the characters, I think I would have cared more about their faits. Perhaps the timeline was stretched out too far? This story felt like it could have been more believable if it had taken place over the course of a week or two, rather than three months. There were many scenes where the weather concerns seemed to have been forgotten, but those little details add reality to a story. If the story hadn't had such a long timeline, I believe a lot of those continuity issues could have been resolved. It's petty stuff, but it's the little things that can drive a reader to distraction.
Did I enjoy this book? I enjoyed parts of it very much! If you like books about werewolves and vampires, this might be the book for you. Jessica Majzner's take on werewolves is so different from anything else that I've read. That alone might make this worth the read. It is a fairly "clean" read, only one minor curse word that I remember seeing. No sex. There is a great deal of violence, although not as graphic as many books I've read. I'd say this book is suitable for 15 year olds and older.
I'm curious enough to want to know more about the characters and their futures. Hopefully, we'll get to know them a little better in the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2016I am a slow reader. I do enjoy this book as it is easy to imagine being there with the characters. I will update later when I complete it. I am a person who doesn't read fiction very often but this story is engaging and entertaining. Check it out. Preteens, teens and adults alike will enjoy this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2016I was sucked into this story from the beginning and couldn't wait to learn more about the main character. I usually don't read stories with vampires but Jessica put a unique twist on them. I don't want to give too much away, but if you are a fan of high fantasy stories with a strong female lead character that really knows how to hold her own against mythical creatures than you'll love this book.

Gary KingReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 1, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Werewolves, vampires and love done right
I was really dubious because of the fact that it is a love story centred around topics that have become cliche in recent years. I was wrong, so very wrong. I loved the main character Natalya, because she is naive and imperfect. It makes her human and relatable. The plot twist are great and unpredictable, although I'm still reeling from ending! Fingers crossed for more to come
Amazon CustomerReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 26, 20165.0 out of 5 stars The characters are awesome and the plot
I read the paperback version of this book and I am blown away! The characters are awesome and the plot, without giving too much away, twists and turns throughout to reach a morbidly fitting ending. I love how supernatural creatures are presented - a brilliant deviance from the usual vampire/werewolf presentations of today. I hope the author keeps writing!
