In The Traitor and the Thief, Gareth Ward's debut novel, a fourteen-year-old boy named Sin is plucked off the streets and given an opportunity to earn a place in the Covert Operations Group (COG). COG is a clandestine organisation dedicated to preventing war, even though it puts them at odds with their own government’s plan for word domination. Despite the dangers, Sin jumps at the chance—anything is better than living on the streets—and soon finds himself at a school for spies. But not all is well at the school. He becomes embroiled in a hunt for a traitor against COG, with one revelation after another making all his newfound friends suspect. Sin has to use his street smarts to catch the traitor, and to find out why he, specifically, was targeted for recruitment.

This book, a fast-paced romp through a steampunk alternate universe, won this year’s Sir Julius Vogel award for Best Youth Novel. It is a bit of a mashup of other sources, including at least Spy Kids, Dickens, J K Rowling, and maybe GirlGenuis, but it’s well done, and the author has his own playful flair for language. He follows in the tradition of Dickens and Rowling in giving his characters entertaining names. The dialog is also very good, and there’s never doubt about which character is speaking:

“Cat got your tonguearooney?” said Zonda.
“You what? I ain’t seen no cat,” said Sin.
“I mean you’re not your usual epigrammatic self.”
    “Still not getting your puff.”

I had a few minor quibbles, but overall I enjoyed it, and look forward to the sequel.

Really fun imaginative read for the young and the not so young. Atmospheric. Great narrative and dialog. Good characters. Easy to visualise the setting. Well paced. You get drawn in to learn about the characters and the setting early on, then it becomes a rip roaring page turner of a read to the end. Hope it'll be a series.

A wonderful new world to enjoy, full of great characters, exciting page turning moments and plenty of twists. You don't need to be a steam punk fan to enjoy this story. Looking forward to the next one.

A brilliant read! Great characters, lots of fun and more than enough complexity to make it a great read for both kids and adults. Sadly, I think I identify far more with cake-loving Zonda than Sin, but I can live with that!

A great book for kids and adults alike, with gorgeous steampunk touches, and a fun plot.
Sin is an orphan, living on the streets of London, when he's hunted down by a strange organization...
There are twists and turns, betrayal and surprises, so I wont give them away and spoil the fun, but I will say, "I can't wait for the sequel."

I picked this book to read because it was Winner of the Tessa Duder Award (NZ) and it didn't disappoint.
    I'd suggest a readership of 10+

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Example of the Steampunk Genre.

I'll admit that I had some trouble with the characters at first, but as in any good book they did evolve after the initial introductory period and it became a most enjoyable romp through a somewhat Dickensian Steampunk world. I suppose this would be classified as YA and I'll admit I'm way past that myself, but what the heck--a good book is a good book!
