Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Susan Crockford is a professional zoologist who has studied polar bear ecology and evolution for more than 20 years. She has a Ph.D. and writes a blog about polar bears past and present called www.polarbearscience.com. For years, readers have been asking for a science book about polar bears suitable for children that offers the same rational, broad perspective as her adult science writing. Susan has written the kind of book about polar bears she wished was available when her own children were young - and here it is, in time for the grandchildren.

This is a charming book with lovely photographs of polar bears and other animals on other pages, and easy to read text. Each major statement is headlined with "Fact or Myth?" and the author then tells which and explains the basis for the choice in clear, easy to read, language. In total it is a charming book that will please children as well as any adults who read it to them. I have worked as a environmental scientist for half a century, much of that work concerned with threatened and endangered species ---- from Sandhill cranes to African elephants. Among my research was the first quantitative estimate ever made of the likely extinction of any species. We used the excellent complete census of whooping cranes, applied these data using mathematics of stochastic processes (about randomness in nature) and came up with a quantitative result. I've done field research on a number of large mammals, including moose and elephants. And I have been reviewing the data about polar bears. There are many subpopulations of these bears, and counts have only been made at the level of a subpopulation. Few of the populations have been counted more than once, so no trend can be established. The large number of bears exceeds what conservationists have used for decades to determine whether a species should be considered threatened or endangered, except for species like the African elephant which are subjected to intense poaching reaching levels that are a considerable fraction of the present total population. For these much higher populations are considered in danger. This book is therefore accurate from a scientist's perspective and, as a parent and grandparent and a writer of trade books myself, I have already bought a copy for someone's grandson.

This a very informative book. The language is clear and easy to understand, the photos are awesome. While those who hold the global warming faith will find the book "unacceptable", the author is a qualified researcher. That reality does not match what some want reality to be is not the fault of the writer of the book. It's a great book for showing your child how resilient nature is and how powerful and plentiful polar bears really are.

(If your child is highly sensitive, there is one photo of a polar bear eating that might upset them. Polar bears are not neat, tidy eaters.)

Scientist Susan Crockford has studied polar bears for more than 20 years and this book is an excellent summary of polar bear ecology and their habits. It is accessible for children and is based upon some of the latest research on polar bears and their ability to survive a constantly changing arctic climate. I highly recommend this book for children and adults alike. It is written in a straightforward fact or myth format.

I thought this book was quite excellent. It explains the basics about polar bear behavior like what they eat, how they hunt, and where they hibernate. It was very honest about the shrinking of the summer sea ice, and about how polar bear populations have rebounded after countries passed laws banning hunting them. A nice little book about a strangely controversial topic.

I have ordered and read this book. Despite what the one-star trolls reviews state, this author is very well qualified to write this book.

Ever since Gore's false film came out, where he stated about the demise of the polar bear due to his alarmist views, I have been extremely skeptical of all such statements.

Our polar bears are not going away any time soon. Let your children learn some great facts about them and know about the myths being put forth about them.

This is a great book for younger children (6-12 age), easy reading, although for most adults it will still provide an uplifting education. Surprisingly my computer happy 12 year old could not wait for it to be delivered. This non-fiction book, with a straight forward description of the life cycles of polar bears and lovely pictures, you come away better educated. It paints a picture for what polar bears really are, fearsome predators that have an uncanny ability to survive a millennia of arctic and human influence. Susan Crockford does not interject opinion, just facts, she as a zoologist does not provide an overriding narrative (refreshing). If you have a budding animal/science lover, I can recommend this book, good bedtime reading. She as a Canadian author helped in my support.
