--Kathy Freston, NY Times bestselling author of Quantum Wellness
"Like many people, I knew as a child that I didn't want to eat animals. That's Why We Don't Eat Animals would have offered me the guidance andinspiration I needed to understand those instincts. This book is amust-have for anyone who loves animals."
--Alicia Silverstone, actress, animal-rights activist

"This book captures the imagination with its illustrations that subtly helpschildren understand the ancient teachings that animals have souls.Animals are our friends and we do not eat our friends. In thisunderstanding it helps us create a more compassionate world. "
--Gabriel Cousens, M.D. author of Conscious Eating, and Spiritual Nutrition
"Declaring that 'All animals deserve the care and protection we give our pets,'newcomer Roth takes the vegetarian/vegan cause to young readers. Highlystylized illustrations against white backdrops depict angularcaricatures of farm animals. Concluding with a list of tips for actionaround vegetarian/vegan ideals, this book is sure to raise awareness and questions."
--Publishers Weekly
"A courageous stab at a serious topic inherently hinted at through theanthropomorphizing of animals so prevalent in children's books. Bycontrasting animal behavior in the wild with that of their counterpartsin farms or factories, Roth makes a stark case that by harvestingsentient beings we are stripping them of their rights and naturaldesires. Inevitably this will book incense those on the other side ofthe issue but there is much to be learned here (about animal behavior if nothing else). A unique effort that is to be applauded."
--Booklist
"This book successfully tackles the tough subject [of veganism] with graceand clarity. This is a great addition to any compassionate kid's library and will make a wonderful gift for any parents in your life who want to talk to their kids about animals but need a little help gettingstarted."
--PETA Living
"That's Why We Don't Eat Animals succeeds in raising awareness about where our food comes from and howour food choices affect other creatures and the environment. Rothtouches on the conditions animals raised on factory farms endure...but she doesn't get overly graphic...That's Why We Don't Eat Animalsnicely connected the dots between how humans treat animals and theimpact our species has on the planet as a whole, with the basic premisebeing that a more enlightened attitude toward our food sources (ofcourse, ideally that would mean becoming vegetarian) translates into ahealthier planet."
--Wired
"Turkeys dance andgrieve together; they blush and fly to the treetops when the moon comesout. In factory farms they have no freedom and are made too fat to fly."
--Kirkus
"The artwork is bright and enchanting...the message is clear, simple, and compassionate."
--Change.org"If each parent read this book to their child, I'm certain more children would consider becoming vegetarian."
--Vegetarian Journal
"That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is an elegantly written, beautifully illustrated children's book aboutthe rationale for vegetarianism. [Roth] uses heartfelt, emotionallyresonant language and art design to contrast the life lived by animalsin the wild with the existence of animals in the factory farming system. This is a children's book with large ambitions...If the cominggenerations are going to strive for a more sustainable approach tofilling their dining room tables, That's Why We Don't Eat Animals should certainly be in their bookcases."
--L.A. Yoga
"You can never be too young to join the fight against cruelty, and Roth'sbook looks like a great tool to help teach the younger generation aboutwhat's happening on factory farms."
--This Just In, VegNews blog
"An American teacher, writer and artist, Roth has come up with aninnovative and somewhat controversial solution for helping childrenfoster compassion towards animals-tell them the truth. That's Why We Don't Eat Animals: A Book About Vegans, Vegetarians, and All Living Things is the first book of its kind targeted toward young people. A candid, but gentle book that discusses what are normally considered taboosubjects for children, such as factory farming, battery hen cages, overfishing, habitat erosion, rainforest health and endangered speciesin relation to food."
--Green Muze
"The illustrations are fantastic, and the message is spot on."
--Vegan Dad blog
"The text does a fine job of explaining this potentially emotional issue without being too fraught with horrifying detail. Ruby Roth is atalented illustrator and author who has written a gently informativechildren's book that will be indispensable to thoughtful familieseverywhere. I am so grateful to her for making that inevitable talk alittle bit easier."
--Your Vegan Mom
"That's Why We Don't Eat Animals makes the case for both vegetarianism and veganism with gorgeous artwork and a clear, firm stance about the needs of animals and the peril to thegreater environment."
--Vegan Future blog
"[That's Why We Don't Eat Animals] makes a sound, green argument for reducing animal consumption as wellas eliminating factory farms. It offers another perspective that ismissing from children's sections in libraries. It is a pleasure to findsuch a well-done book on the subject"
--Kids Lit blog
"Though this book tackles a difficult subject for younger children, it does sowell. This is a good book for vegetarian families or parents who areraising their kids veggie and want a way to explain it to them. Withoutgetting too graphic (animals in confined cages are as dark as it gets),it explores basic issues of factory farming and discusses its effects on the environment. Roth is able to get her point across without becomingtoo preachy or delving into topics that aren't age-appropriate.
--The Kids' Book Corner blog
"Wonderfully illustrated and inspiring for children of all ages, author Ruby Rothhas tackled the complex moral and ethical issue of choosing to be avegetarian, distilling it into a compassionate and informative snapshotof the emotional lives of animals in their natural state. That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is a timely reminder to look inside our hearts and reconsider thechoices we make-and their impact on our fellow creatures and thewell-being of the planet."

"If you are planning on raising a vegetarian child who will bewell-prepared to explain his or her beliefs to inquiring peers, teachers, and friends' parents, That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is a great start... The animals are charmingly drawn in a caricaturist, almost geometric style, and their environments are depicted with brightor dark colors, depending on their living conditions. The vocabulary issimple and straightforward, doesn't get too dark or complicated forchildren, and avoids a preachy, overbearing tone in favor of asensitive, informative one."--Feminist Review
"Roth's artistry brings the story to life through color and rigid form."
--Farmbrarian
"Ruby's beautiful illustrations are colorful and whimsical, and theyhave a way of keeping my daughter's eyes glued to the page! ... This isby far the most gentle, yet eye opening, animal rights book availablefor our youngest generation!"
--The Vegan Mom
"[That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is] a delightful, beautifully illustrated guide to some of the world'smost pressing topics--from health to environment to animal protection--for children ages 4-10."
--Elephant Journal
"Roth created her new illustrated book, That's Why We Don't Eat Animals, for elementary school aged children, exploring topics such as factoryfarming, overfishing and rainforest destruction in a manner that istruthful, yet age-appropriate."
--Compassionate Living Magazine
"Roth gently discusses what is wrong with the way we raise food... If eachparent read this book to their child, I'm certain more children wouldconsider becoming vegetarian."
--Vegetarian Resource Group
"A book written for children and their families, That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is just as vital an addition to the veg-friendly library as John Robbin's The Food Revolution or Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals, because its simple, yet profound message--that the animals of this world have as much a desire to live and love their families as we do--isenough to become a seed of change for good in the hearts of children and grown-ups alike. I've never seen a book that handles the subject offactory farming, overfishing, and the destruction of our fellow animalsand planet so delicately."
--Kiss Me, I'm Vegan
"I recently began my search for a simple, clear children's book aboutvegetarianism. I wanted something more than a story about anunrealistic, cartoon animal, as well as a story that touched on theenvironment and American factory farms... I was really happy to find That's Why We Don't Eat Animals by Ruby Roth."
--Erin, MN Veggie Mama
"That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is a milestone in children's literature."
--Vegetarians in Paradise
"Ruby's illustrations are just superb. She has an abstract style and theanimals are almost, but not quite, painted in caricature. I commend herfor making a visually pleasing book while not shying away from therealities of animal use. That's Why We Don't Eat Animals coversjust about every aspect of animal exploitation, and does it in asensitive way that breaks the awful truth to our children as easily aspossible."
--Raw on $10 a Day (or Less!)
"A gorgeously illustrated children's book that we are just mad for."
--The GirlieGirl Army

- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhile this book is beautifully illustrated and informative to young readers I returned because my son was a bit to old for the level of content. Perfect for young children to be read to or early self readers. It isn't scary but rather helps young readers understand that animals are here with us and not for us and that they deserve to live life to the fullest with their families and friends and in a loving and caring environment. I hope all young readers discover this book at some point! My son is 10 1/2. The content was not new to him. If this is new content for your older child then go for this, it is a great intro to vegan lifestyle, otherwise I would say it may be better suited for younger readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2010Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI read this beautiful, touching book last night for the first time with my 3 year old son. He was so engaged, right from the beginning, which I'm sad to say is not his usual! He asked so many questions about why the animals looked sad, and were in cages. I told him it was so people could eat them later, and he said "but that's not right...I'm going to get those cows out with my super powers!" (and continued to show me his muscles). He also asked me why I was crying. I truly believe that this book opened the door for us to talk about why we don't eat any animals in a way that he could understand, all the while being a visually stunning (and heart wrenching) book. I told my omnivore husband, I'm still working on him, to feel free to read it to our son today while I was at work. Maybe something will click within him and he'll see the sadness that comes from eating animals. Until then, I'll read this beautiful book to my sons knowing that we're doing the right thing. The book also touches on habitat destruction & endangered species, and gives ways to continue to help our world and the animals that we share it with, which was a nice addition at the end. Please, please, please buy or borrow this book, and share with as many humans as you can.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI love this book and the way it explains animal welfare and the environment to kids. It has beautiful illustration and the story will help kids understand why it's important to not eat animals for all involved.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2012Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is a wonderful book for anyone, regardless of age. I bought it because I loved the illustrations and because I know I want to have children someday and wanted a good book to teach them about veganism in addition to what I will teach them. The imagery is amazing-- and heartbreaking at times. The story is easy to read, informative and honest. Some young or really sensitive children might have a hard time with the discussion about animals on factory farms, but it's not graphic or violent... just honest. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2014Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI transitioned to a vegan lifestyle in January 2014 and with my kids being 5 and 3, I needed a way to relay vegan information/lifestyle to them in a way they'd understand. This book definitely did the job. It's not graphic but it does show images of sad animals in a perfectly kid-appropriate way. Now my children understand that pain and suffering -- and ultimately death by slaughter -- occurs in order for one to eat meat. The wording is easy and understandable and the art is very appealing to the eye. I was so happy with this book that I went on to purchase another of Ruby Roth's books to further convey the vegan message to my young children. I absolutely recommend this book to parents looking to do the same.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2019Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis was THE book for my daughter. We live in a pretty big vegan bubble and rarely have had to talk to her about dairy or meat, we just don't encounter it all that often. At the store more and more she was catching glimpses of candies and other things and all I could think to say was, we choose not to eat that, but it wasn't a great answer. Or I'd say that it was for baby cows or it was bad food etc, but that seemed to make it more confusing. This book completed that connection for her in understanding that some people, even people we love and normally trust, might be eating things we don't eat, like dairy and eggs, and WHY we don't eat them, and what those things look like. The author is phenomenal at making this pictures and narrative that invites questions and compassion and allows children as young as 2.5 to grasp the ethics of right and wrong and love and healthy eating. Now instead of asking me why we don't buy certain things, she asks if something has dairy or if it is vegan "like us". She asks if someone we know is vegan or if they "eat animals". If youre raising a vegan child and are looking for ways to talk to your children without becoming too graphic or evil, this book was perfect!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2013Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThank you to Ruby Roth for writing such an informative but compassionate book. She has taken a very ugly situation and helped convey the message in a way for kids to understand without the horror I've seen. I am so grateful for this book to help show kids that animals have feelings and what is happening to them and the earth hurts. It discusses many positive ways that the kids can make a difference and it teaches kids to be an activist and stand up for what they believe in!!
Thanks again for this well written and illustrated book. I think all kids, meat eaters or not, should educate themselves on what is happening in their world.

AnnalisaReviewed in Italy on August 1, 20165.0 out of 5 stars That's why we don't eat animals
Psychonaut_BroadReviewed in Germany on September 3, 20125.0 out of 5 stars Just as expected
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is just as lovely as I have expected. The book doesn't spread the violent facts we know about animal slaughtering. It rather concentrates on the fact that all living things strive to be alive, and so all living things should have the same rights. The social aspect is the one that also made be become a vegetarian and by now a vegan and I am very glad that I found this book. There's so much misinformation and prejudices concerning this topic, but I experienced that people with the oppposite view on animal products took a curious glimpse into the book and gave it credit.I also love how it is illustrated. It's a children's book, but definitely one that appeals grown ups. .
Be prepared though for comments as "This is inappropriate for children.". Everyone has to figure out for themselves but personally I think, that children are curious and open-minded and way more sincere than many grown ups. Children are often shocked when confronted with where the meat comes from. They will accept it eventually because they watch the poeple around them taking it as being "normal". It's definitely not harmful it you tell your children the truth in a gentle way. This is exactly what the book does.

Magali DuezReviewed in France on October 7, 20125.0 out of 5 stars Un très beau livre
Keely ArychukReviewed in Canada on May 25, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Good book
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is a good book to read to my child about being Vegan. It's quite lengthy for my three year old, we just shorten the story. It will be great to read it in its entirety when they are older.
Sunshine and smilesReviewed in the United Kingdom on September 17, 20165.0 out of 5 stars At last! A book which explains what it means to eat animals in a sensitive, but honest way for young children
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI bought this book for my five year old daughter who I've bought up vegetarian and who has started asking questions. It is beautifully illustrated and deals with the subject in a sensitive, but honest way - helping children to make the connection between animals (their feelings, the lives they don't get to live, families, etc.) and the food that people eat. It's wonderful that such a book exists. It should be read to all children in primary school so that future generations appreciate where meat comes from and can make an informed decision at an early age whether to eat animals.. It doesn't cover veganism in terms of eggs and dairy - but I believe that Ruby Roth has written books on veganism too.
