In order for concerned world citizens to gain a more correct perspective on world affairs, they must look beyond what has devolved into a condescending, provincial attitude displayed by the major "mainstream" media entities, in any number of countries both West and East, and delve into intelligent expositions of world history and events in order to develop a fuller understanding of the nature of those events - and what outcomes may be implied by them. Dilip Hiro's "After Empire..." should be considered a very worthy and rich source for helping all individuals to build that perspective. The information (and yes, opinions) in this book provide a much needed expansion of understanding of the complete context in which we find ourselves.
Mr. Hiro presents a detailed and nuanced body of work to support the case that the inevitability (or even desirability) of a US-led (read: "unipolar") "world order" is no longer certain, if indeed it ever was. He describes in this text much of the history and circumstances of the players and regions in this so-called "world order" over the last century, and illustrates that, because of the motivations and actions of these players, in these many regions, there is plenty of evidence that the forces in world events are being and will continue to be initiated from multiple sources - hence the "multipolarity" of the title. He also endeavors to demonstrate that world outcomes are not nor will be caused by a hegemonic series of events that are solely initiated by and dictated from just one government - nor any corporate conglomeration enabled by such government.
Mr. Hiro also outlines how the needs, desires and philosophies of world players other than the US - which include China, India, Russia and Brazil, to name only the largest - not only will continue to press to the fore (and stay there) in driving world events going forward, but indeed have already been doing so to varying extents in the past, and are doing so even more at present. It is a fair perception that the major "mainstream" media entities have not represented global developments to a sufficient degree to bring these realities home to the general public, and have not cast these world realities in such a light that public opinion can rise to a more informed state, and in that state then demand that their government(s) assume a much more cooperative posture with regard to international relations.
Hence the need for each person to expand their insights into the full gamut of world activity, and the history which brings us to this moment. Books such as "After Empire..." are a great help in that endeavor.
